Here is the other issues that concern me. The wiring harness(s). The cannon plug on one engine is completely melted. Also, the wiring on the back of the engine is a mess. None of the relays or fuses are mounted to anything. Wires are hanging everywhere. I don't know if it was always like this or it was just taken apart. I'm not sure if any wires in the efi harness were damaged as well. I don't think I want to chance it and will be replacing the harness(s).

How do you fry an ECM? With lousy wiring!

Looks like what Eddie said, plug fried from outside in, which is probably hot enough to melt a pair ECM internals, or maybe the previous tuner tuned the motors to get lava hot so they themselves ignite the fuel inside the cylinders? It also provides a color show in the engine compartment. Merc blue turns to fire orange, and stainless turns to rainbow…

Eddie are you have the ECMs repaired or replacing the whole ignition systems , I didnt know if those ECMs were repairable .
|
They aren't really repairable since they are potted. They are tough to get into. It really depends on what is wrong with it. In 99% of the cases they aren't worth messing with and just get replaced.
I have only seen like 5 of them go bad, and 2 were on the same boat that was struck by lightening. It took out everything electrical on the entire boat. Eddie |

I fried my ECM yrs ago when rewiring my dash warning buzzer. They don't like it when you put 12v to a lead that is supposed to be grounded. So any type of problem in the harness or plug is easy to understand frying ECMs.

When lots of things wrong can be caused by one thing, its a good idea to check that one thing. Especially when that one thing (wiring) is clearly damaged. Wiring is really, really cheap. Do it first, do it well. |

Long story short...motors got tore down and we will be replacing Crank, Connecting rods, cam, bearings....and possibly pistons. It will basically be a total rebuild this time using the proper parts. I wish I could say Im surprised....but Im not. |
What the hell is going on !!!! whats wrong with the parts that are in there they work just fine ??:lolhit:
|
What was or is your current setup, and whats the new build?
What parts did he spec out for the new build? |

Id rather not get into the details. However, anyone who knows what would be considered junk parts (Crank and rods) in a 1000hp motor can probably draw their own conclusions as to what was installed.

ed Thank you for the encouragement. I feel very good about who's hands the motors are in now....better late than never I guess. |

I always throw my broken stuff away. I DO NOT want to remember or build a larger garage!

TRL, I wish you the best on this. I feel the same way you do.
I've only had the most highly respected people wrench my offshore powerboats. I am sure everyone on this board knows them, as they are very high profile. I am so dissatisfied with their work I've pulled the engines out and I'm going with outboards, probably Hondas. I am so done with shops that charge a lot, and often do not do what they claim they do, and certainly don't make an attempt at doing the right thing for the customer: just run up the bill. $8K, $11K, $6K, $14K, $5K, $8K, ... Gets pretty sickening when those are for service and repair every month or three, not upgrades. Examples include never actually properly aligning the engine mounts, leading to several coupler failures. I was charged, and paid for the re-alignment, but when I stripped the boat, I find the factory original mounts, never re-drilled, never moved, so I was simply ripped off, both for the supposed alignment, and for the several subsequent failures and loss of use of my boat. Another example: the wiring was degraded due to salt water use. I thought that was the problem, but first two different "top shops" took me for literally tens of thousands of dollars, replacing all sorts of stuff, nodding and smiling, suggesting what's really needed is a new pair of their custom shop engines. Just like I see happening to you, TRL. And finally, I had the wiring harnesses replaced, and all the problems vanished. Cheap, quick. But no, the vacuuming of the my wallet had to happen first for a couple of frustrating years. Replacing most of the stuff you are paying for, TRL. Another: on one engine, the temperature would creep up. Sounds like cooling water flow, right? Well, "Mr. Integrity" took me for over $20K on that, and he finally ate another $10K invoice, because the symptoms were still IDENTICAL after installing a lot of very beautiful polished SS pieces. Absolutely no improvement. When I stripped the boat, I again discovered that what I paid to have done had not been done. I suspected the problem was a clogged heat exchanger, and sure enough, when I pulled it off, it was clogged. As I f*cking told him, as he charged me for, but was not done. After paying him close to $100K for work on my last two boats, I'll never have him touch one of my boats again, and I'm sure he feels the same way about me. I paid top dollar to widely respected mechanics to do that work. But too often, the work either was simply not done at all, or the less important but flashy and expensive stuff was done instead of what needed to be done. One thing I could always count on: the invoices were always top dollar! I knew it was a mistake to start owning boats I could not fix. I learned my lesson! |
I met Eddie back around 2003. I had gone broke buying custom power from engine builders and I had friends that were running most of the builders that I hadn't and it was always one thing after another from all of them. I bought a pair of Merc 500 takeouts from Eddie and I talked to him for most of the day as he showed me various engines that he was building. Most of them were on a 598ci platform with whipples. I had also built my own blower motors and they all blew up. I learned more in one day from Eddie than I had in my entire hotrod career. I ran the 500's for a season and then Eddie began building all of my circle of friends engines and my personal engines. He completely re-rigged my old boat and to say that I got a PHD out of the process is an understatement. He showed me a fuel plumbing problem that was responsible for melting my own engines that I built. 2 years ago I bought an Outerlimits with another builders 1100 Quadrotors in it. The weather was bad and I didn't even sea trial it. I gave the guy a cashiers check and then drove 800 miles home. When I got home, I called Eddie to come over and ck it out. He pointed out the good points of the rigging and the bad. He reworked the blowers for me with his quadrotor upgrades and made some other changes. Now I have a turn key 1200hp 125mph v bottom that I just change oil in. If Eddie had not come over and examined what I had and made the changes he did before I went out and matted the boat, I would have spent tons of $$$ and who knows how much downtime. Eddie knows his business and gets smarter with every set of engines he builds. Eddie was building 1400 HP blower motors in 2004/2005 with hydraulic roller cams, longer refresh intervals than mercs lower HP motors and they had the drivability of 500s. You are in good hands.

You dont need to be gettin Eddies head any bigger than it is , he has a hard time getting it through the shop doors the way it is :lolhit: Hey Eddie have you got any news for us yet or some pics , talk to you later .

I was at eddie's shop today and took a pic of the engines. Here it is...
They are the ones in the middle... http://www.modifiedplanet.com/wp-con...s-junkyard.jpg |
I'm sorry Eric, as I hate to laugh at your expense, yet again, but that pic right there is freakin funny.

I do have a few pics of the engines as they were taken apart. I am hesitant to post the pics and things that we found since it will look as though I am trying to start something and/or hurt someone's reputation. I will gladly sent the pics and info to Eric and if he wants to post it then that is up to him. Eddie |

I was not able to attend the 2011 Shootout due to my wifes health issues, but we all went in 2010. I came in second for top gun V bottom and guess who beat me.....EDDIE! :) I could not have been happier if I had won. His motors won the class below and he had several others running around that weekend. We all ran the hell out of boats for four days, drove 18 miles to the racecourse everyday and we were racing with 3/4 tanks of fuel and all the chit in the boats. I was making sandwiches and handing out drinks while I was in the staging area. The only time any of us opened the hatches were to do a visual and show off the bling. Some of the best times I have ever had in my 27+ years of boating have all been running Eddies power. You always hear about when something bad happens to someone with custom power but you don't hear as much about the success stories. The reason is....the guys are out enjoying thier boats. I have just read so much negative info lately that I really felt like sharing another side for once. OK, I'm done. Back to the drama.:evilb: |
I love that pic , thats funny I think Eddie better pick up the pace theres allot of work piling up !!!! , again I think the people need to know and to see the real deal , these are just facts plain and simple . I do think in this business sad but true people dont know what they are getting , they cant see whats inside there engine , just the builders word and the bill , like Erick he had trust but that wasnt enough . By the way we love to hassle Eddie . would love to see some pics but thats up to you guys .

As I am sure you all know by now I have a pretty good sense of humor over this whole phucked up mess...I enjoy the good nature jabbing. Its either I laugh or I kill someone...lol. |
I was thinking of putting a bigger motor in mine. I think I am cured.
