1044 lbs was right out of the merc specs for a 6.2L/bravo 1 "propulsion package". Propulsion package doesn't have tail pipes, just the manifolds and risers, but tailpipes would only a couple of pounds. 350 Mag with B1 drive is listed at 1025 lb. 502 Mag MPI package with B1 drives is listed at 1189 lb and 454 Mag MPI package is listed at 1177 lb. So the adder of about 100 lb was real close.

My boat is a heavy pig with twins. No denying it.

But it pops out of the hole in a heartbeat with the big K-Planes all down and two props, without being heavy on the throttle and beating up on the drives. And still runs 72 to 75 depending on the day.

For me it wasn't the expected maintanance cost of an extra engine, it was that single XR drive with its upper gear issues and pushing the TQ through one prop.

Each to their own. 400+ hp through a B1 x 2 props, or 525HP through an XR on the same sized boat?
I took the 800+ hp and the twin screws. Others didn't. There is probably no single right answer for everybody.

The dealer where I bought my Fountain had both a 2006 29' with 525 and twin 6.2s. He said that the twin 6.2s got on a plane much easier and it would be some time before the 525 boat would catch it and pass it. He did say the 525 boat was at least 5 m.p.h. faster. If you look at the Fountain literature is puts the twin 6.2 boat at about 70 and the 525 boat at 75.

To plane I generally put the tabs down to 4 and tuck in the drives. I give it about 2500 r.p.m.s and as it starts to come over on a plane I will roll the r.p.m.s up to 3000. The boat easily gets on a plane with full fuel (132-140 advertised gallons) and 5 adults onboard. I have always liked the twins for docking but imagine, once on a plane, the 525 boat would accelerate quicker and the additional top speed would be nice.

There are two aftermarket Mercury Scorpion model small blocks that are 383 cu.in (the 6.2 w/a .030 bore increase) that make 400 h.p. and 425 h.p. with CMI exhaust. This should put the top speed right at 78-80. This setup uses 89 octane fuel so no on-water fill-ups for many of us. Lots of options for power on the 29' Fever. Pretty much something for everyone.

A smaller prop or gear change can turn it into one but you will lose the cruise/top end.

It's not a drag boat, but will outrun anything in its class once it gets its legs under it. And looks really good to boot.
My 29 warlock will beast right past u with a 575!!!!! Fountains are only 27 1/2 feet without your extra nose hanging out there...

Just wondering...

For a boat that will see occasional offshore use (for example, running to Catalina Island, or perhaps to KW from the mainland, etc.) does the redundancy of the extra engine make a twin SB boat a better choice than a single BB boat?

Given the choice, would you rather have twin SB's or a 496/502?

Just thought i'd add a couple of variables, here. I'm just researching for now, probably one or two seasons from purchase depending on how much I end up spending, but the whole twin Small Block vs. single Big Block keeps me double guessing myself.

I'm in AZ, so the majority of my boating will be on lakes and reservoirs, but whatever I end up in, I definately plan on seeing some real offshore action, and KW, etc. are definately on the list of places to visit and enjoy on the water.

FWIW, top speed is not a big issue for me, I just want a solid boat that can handle some moderately rough water should I encounter it.

I have a 29 that I take to Havasu alot and love it. I also take it in the winter to Catalina and it does pretty well depending on the conditions.

2002, 29 575sci, XR drive hydro 5 blade 28,
stuff the drive and tabs down to max, with about 3/4 throttle is pops right up. i do however lose top end compared to the 32 that came with it.
And I personaly think a 29 with a single big block is the only way to fly!
