Mid Summer's Peconic Boat Blast
We are organizing a Fun Run to Claudio's of Greenport LI for lunch. The month is July and the date is the 10th with a rain date of the 11th. The time is 11:00 - 11:30 AM. Two fleets will converge on Claudio's resturaunt; one from the LI Sound with, the other from the Peconic. A Northern meets Southern fleet kind of thing. :eureka:
The Northern group consisting of Long Island's North Shore, Southern Connecticut and even RI. The Southern Group consisting of Southern Long Island and anyone from Jersey ( :) Pat you reading this?) ...... Those interested should post. We would have to firm the number of boats and people fast as we would need to talk to the folks at Claudio's. Let's roll with this thing!! I have changed (and will be changing) this 1st post to reflect the latest decisions. That way folks don't have to dive through the entire thread to get the latest info, or even open the thread if they use the preview mode recently installed by the our hosts Offshore only. |

Re: Mid Summer's Peconic Boat Blast
Hello all,
This is Duncan. Caren and I are in. Check out the photos Steve took of my new Fountain Dragonfire on his photo link.. Thanks Steve. Please Email the better ones to me at [email protected].. Also thanks for allowing me to use your lift until Vinnie finishes your repairs... I checked with Doug Carmen at Hydrohoist and am awaiting his return call. So much for his promise to have my lift upgraded by mid May.. If anyone on the southshore knows of a Hydrohoist available 7500lbs-9000lbs, I am interested.... |
Re: Mid Summer's Peconic Boat Blast
Hey Steve, in case I forget to mention it, We should place this thread on the Poker Run section so that more people may see it....
|
Re: Mid Summer's Peconic Boat Blast
Duncan, you can't place this thread there and here, but you can start a thread there with directions to this thread. I'll wait on doing that until we have a reasonable format worked out here first. Once we know what we are doing, we can advertise....

Re: Mid Summer's Peconic Boat Blast
Hey Steve,
As per my conversation with Frankie of Francescos , he gave me the following sites to monitor for ocean conditions.. They are excellant. He says if we are running off the beach, any wind out of the the north, less then 18mph will be ok.. Any southerly winds under 14mph are ok. of course watch the wave height + frequency info. The first buoy is 25miles off Islip: http://seaboard.ndbc.noaa.gov/statio...?station=44025 The second buoy is off of Montauk: http://seaboard.ndbc.noaa.gov/statio...?station=44017 |
Re: Mid Summer's Peconic Boat Blast
Well thank you Katapult for that update. Does this not make you a Grand Father ?? Julia is a great name and congrats to the family.
Duncan, thats valuable info on the Ocean stations, maybe a few less bruises over time... Thanks... |
Re: Mid Summer's Peconic Boat Blast

Re: Mid Summer's Peconic Boat Blast
I suggest that we make the date July 17th with a rain date of July 18th. If all are in favor I will call Claudio's and discuss what their requirements are for docking and for eating. I suspect they want a minimum number of boats to reserve docking and tables. It's important to have an idea of how many boats and people are interested. So you guys need to talk up so I can frame it a bit for them. So far I count;
Gary's 29, Gregg's 35, Duncan's 29, Tripps 30, HPFountain from Mariners Cove Mariner, Christian Gott and friends, my 29 for a total of 7 definite boats. Not bad for a few days of a thread. Including the West Great South Bay Boys I know, Gregg's East End fleet and the Mariners Cove folks I think we with hit 14 - 16 boats. I think there will be more.. But it would be good to know how much more. I think we need a North Group contact person and would like to name Gary (Gferdon) as skipper there. If Gregg (Fastfountain35) doesn't mind, I think he should be the East Southern Fleet Skipper and I will be the West Southern fleet contact person. Some one has to decide when to start and then to stop etc. What about route meetings? One meeting or multiple meetings for each area? I liked the idea of using the handheld marine radio's last time for communication and I think Pat from Jersey's idea of channel 69 worked out great. We need a meeting point for both North and South and maybe a few pickup points along the way. I think we should meet at Claudio's at high noon. These are my idea's and I am happy to modify as we discuss. What do you all think?? Steve |
Re: Mid Summer's Peconic Boat Blast
With my handle, I MUST be in on that. I live in Quogue (between Westhampton & Southampton) and about 5 minutes (by boat) from Vinnie. (Vinnie: Pls PM me!!!)
7/17 does NOT look good for me, though: Atlantic City OPA Race. I also can't the 7/30 weekend (St. Clair, MI OSS/GLSCS race) Everything else is wide open. |

Southern Route
Two main options for the Southern Route: On the Inside from Babylon to the Shinnecock Canal. Or on the Outside from Babylon to Shinnecock Inlet & Canal. I'd make that optional or dependent on the weather. I'd also forget any ideas of going all the way to Montauk on the outside. Although possible, this makes the trip too dependent on wind & waves. Shinnecock Lock & Canal is a major chokepoint, especially on a Saturday. You want to be through that early, before the mayhem starts. A milling&meeting on the Northern Side of the Canal is recommended. (Northern Side is after you have transited from Shinnecock Bay to Peconic Bay.) Then the classic route is through Peconic Bay, fork right at Shelter Island, pass Sag Harbor, go all the way round Shelter Island and finally approach Claudio's from the North-East. That would also give an opportunity to join up with the Northern contingent that would come in from the Sound at Plum Island. It would probably be more practical to join North & South at Claudio's though. Claudio's typically wants their organized crowds early, 11am to 12 noon latest. |
Re: Mid Summer's Peconic Boat Blast
This being a non-denominational run, I have posted an announcement in the Rallyes, Poker Runs etc. section, with a link to here.

Re: Mid Summer's Peconic Boat Blast
Welcome Peconic! Your Peconic Bay experience particularly around Shelter Island will be a help. I am fine with July 10th and the 11th as a rain day. Weigh in guys.... As far as the southern route goes to Shelter Island I am fine with outside or inside. For the "1st annual Ferdon Fun Run" I lead the inside and Gregg lead the outside. We just have to watch the timing of when we start. Let's get this thing moving and what about T-shirts??? Anyone interested in picking that up?

Re: Mid Summer's Peconic Boat Blast
Count me in from the North! Looking forward to it!
Will be good to hook up with Peconic, Tripps, and some new friends too. |
Re: Mid Summer's Peconic Boat Blast
Hey, Pat!
I'm still in Europe, but will be back in Quogue on Sat. I had a quick chat with Vinnie (HPFountain) and we can cover our end of the run. I'll talk with Vinnie again on Monday. July 10 would be just perfect for me. Clashing with the Atlantic City OPA race would not be a good idea, because that usually draws a lot of boats from the region. B |
Re: Mid Summer's Peconic Boat Blast
Glad you are both on board. Spoke with Bill Claudio who directed me to his Brother-in-law Jerry Tutile who is supposed to call me back. He handles the dock and clam bar. The trick will be to get there early as docking is first come first serve (11 -12). The other issue will be that the tall ships will be there on the 10th, with a few of them docked at Claudio's. We might have to raft a few boats, so we should bring our bumpers. But very cool to be there with the ships!!
Peconic can you give us a more detailed route around Shelter Island? Again we should arange a place for the west Bay boys to meet the east bay boys to meet the Shinnecock boys etc. Gregg can we hook up at the Sonoma Grill again? Steve |

Going there with the tall ships would be BLAST!!!! Coming in at 11 would be mandatory anyway to get space, and rafting up also is very common when doing these outings.
I'd say, let's go for the 10th!!! Going 'round Shelter is easy, not much to worry about except for the Ferry (don't run into it) and some rocks near Sag Harbor (don't run into them.) I have it all on my GPS/map system, detailled route on Sunday when I'm back in Quogue. Tell the folks at the Clam Bar that Professor Toolhammer sends his regards. Who's up for some exploratory runs next week? |
Re: Mid Summer's Peconic Boat Blast
Hey Guys,
Saturday is never as busy as Sunday at Claudio's and they don't even open until 11:30 or 12:00. Should not be a big problem with dockage. There is also a long town/state pier right next door between the ferry and the clam bar. I have been to 3 poker runs that have passed through Claudio's, you have picked the perfect spot. The people at Claudio's are vary accommodating and know how to handle an event like this. Also, if anyone decides to stay for the night, Greenport has a lot to offer. You can stay right at Claudio's, the town dock, or in Cockle's harbor in the middle of Shelter Island. You fellows have me all fired up!!! :D |
Re: Mid Summer's Peconic Boat Blast
anyone who whants to hook up on the south shore between patchogue and shilry, give me a ring. greg.631-445-1643.

Re: Mid Summer's Peconic Boat Blast
Timing: So if we assume a little bit before 12 noon arrival at Claudio's, we should leave a bit after 11 from the North side of Shinnecock Canal. I don't know how much transit time to allow for canal & lock, it can be straight through or a wait, depending on whether the lock is locking or not, and on how much traffic there is. Vinnie should know, he's right there. Let's call it 30 minutes. Add to that whatever time it takes for the Southern Contingent to arrive from Greater Babylon, and that's your departure time.
Low tide for Shinnecock will be 9:35 AM. Low tide for Moriches Bay will be 12:56 PM. So the going will be a bit tricky through Shinnecock Bay, easy when going back home. I'll pick you guys up somewhere along the way from Babylon and guide you through Shinnecock. Bay has been dredged last Winter, I haven't tried it yet, been away all of May. Will investigate next week. |
Re: Mid Summer's Peconic Boat Blast
Great info Peconic. Thank you very much!
|
Re: Mid Summer's Peconic Boat Blast
Hey Peconic,
Do you remember what time we left tripps and zz last Summer? I think about 9-9:30, then we fueled up. Anyway, we were at Claudio's, docked up, waiting for them to open. We would have been there earlier if we had not run aground... :o I would guesstimate 2, 2-1/2 hours from Babylon. :) |
Re: Mid Summer's Peconic Boat Blast
Yeah, sounds about right.
|
Re: Mid Summer's Peconic Boat Blast
I agree with 2.5 hrs. But we need to leave a little more time in that for slowing down to group up.
I see the Babylon boys (me, tripps, DragonFire Baja boys, Huslter etc) starting out at 8:00 - Call it Point 1 Meet the Patchougue boys (Fastfountain and friends) maybe at the Patchouge River-arive 8:30 or Bellport Bay-arive 8:45 or where ever - time TBD. Call it Point 2 On to Shinnecock meet at Mariners Cove arive 9:45 - leave 10:00 for Point 3 Through the locks into the Peconic where we re-group maybe meet more people leave 10:30 or so call it point 4 Hit Claudio's 11 - 11:30... I really think for rafting purposes (given reduced dock space) and as Bill Claudio said getting there at 11 - 11:30 is best. What about the Northern Fleet? So far only Gferdon has chimed in and truth is he could join anywhere along the Southern route. Is there a Northern Fleet?????????????? :blaster: Where are you???? :blaster: You guys do boat up there... :) :) What happened to all the CT guys?? :eureka: Steve |
Re: Mid Summer's Peconic Boat Blast
Sounds like a plan.
|
Re: Mid Summer's Peconic Boat Blast
I was thinking the same thing with regard to the Northern participants...anyone home? If so, we could essentially do the same thing. Western sound guys would start out at a time to be deternined and meet any folks (like me) at points east...most likely Port Jeff for me and whoever else might be interested from this area. It all remains to be seen. If we do not have any interested parties from this area, I would most likely join the Southshore guys at Blue Point or Heckshire. Let's hear from you western LI sound people so we can develop a plan. Good weekend to all.
