Great Moments in Cat History

Boatless, that was the point. To allow a racer to build an engine in thier garage and race it. That would dramatically reduce the cost to the racers and the income to APBA. I like what APBA has done to level the playing field and stop the runaway spending for the Superboat (call it the biggest class - SuperCat) class. However APBA must not look to the racers to fund the operations of the LLC. I would have liked to see them place 1/2 of the income from any deal such as the one with Mercury back into the prize purse. After all, players that win the superbowl get a bonus don't they? Doesn't that bonus money come from sponsor and TV money? There needs to be some level of sharing with the people that risk thier lives to put on a good show.
Both sanctioning bodies are for profit organinzations. I just see the CRE program as a money sucker from the guys who want to race. (Why does a new HP500 need to come out of the boat and go through a $10,000 certification process. I understand that teams can't even take off a valve cover to check the springs without shipping the engines back to FLA. Am I wrong on this? I hope so!
SBI wanted to use the land and sea DYNO but there was a problem with the prop shaft size of the new bravos so Land and Sea was supposed to make some changes. I brought this up once before on this board and I was told that there are ways to cheat the system. I am not that smart.

Catmando,
I understand how the APBA Performance classes work(raced P1 on the west coast a couple times last year).
Your statement was:
"Set them up for a certain top speed like the Outlaw classes, and open them up to any engine, transmission and drive, so long as the class top speed isn't exceeded."
Using that rule I could build a boat capable of running 20-30 MPH faster than the top speed for the class and then just limit it to speed as I said using a GPS, you could have a whole field of boats all running the exact same speed.

RonP: Id be interested to know how you could cheat that system, properly done, you cant. Have a rule that there is no opening of engine hatches on the cool off lap and the boats go directly to impound from the racecourse.

Merlin 540 Your boat was the Dirty Laudry boat campained by Joe Mach. Bought by the Danomins name changed to agitator.Raced undefeated for 10races I think. Seems it is one of the better handling 32s . Great set up. Are you going race or just play? Good luck with your toy. Tell Jim + Jean I said Hi. By the way, I think I have an old tape of dirty laundry runing, I forget what race around 87 or88. michael w.

Twin, like I said, I am not that smart to trick the dyno. Some other folks on the board said it could be done but never said how. I still like the idea very much becuase the CRE deal is way too expensive for my tastes.

Oh maybe I am that smart?
Won't it be possible to have a hidden switch to retart the spark a bit or slow the fuel flow for the dyno test?
I have seen boats set up with a spark advance system at the helm to adjust for different grades of fuel. And it wouldn't be too hard to slow the fuel flow, would it.
I know I am argueing against myself, does anyone else have a comment on the mobile Dyno?

Dyno readings in uncontrolled environments can be easily defeated via spark controls, fuel and/or air restrictions, or outdrive brakes to name a few. Also, you get into the mess of applying correction factors for the ambient temp/humidity. A 500 hp motor under cool/dry conditions will easily fall to a "legal" 470 hp on a hot muggy day.

Cspray- They have a chassis dyno to check hp outputs on production racing motorcycles up here. It is up to the competitor to make sure his machine falls below the class limit. For the 600 class the limit is 123 hp,123.1 hp your toast, and they couldnt care less if the temp just dropped 10 degrees and they dont get into correction factors. It is up to YOU. races are regulrily won with 118 119hp and all the guys agree its the best thing that ever happened to the class.Dont try and complicate it, its very simple. Some guys were leaving the choke partly on but the officials were soon on to all their tricks. If the HP500 puts out 470 propshaft hp I would suggest putting the limit at 480 485.You can roll the dice and tune up, but you might get burnt, remember its up to YOU
