From the Velocity website:
"In 1981, two very significant events in Steve’s life occurred and the history of offshore boating was changed forever. In that year, Steve and Gene were the first men to break the 100 mph barrier in a V-bottom boat at the annual kilo trials with a 30-foot Velocity."
With all things equal, hp, weight, etc. the pad-V bottom will always be faster than a straigt V.

Most "pads" blend in with the rest of the bottom as they approach the bow, and are not visable from a front view.

And I'm GUESSING that the Velocity or Older Non Step Fountains would be the "fastest" non step hull - because they are padded.
And....fastest means straight line and relatively calm water.
I'd really like to take a Sutphen for a ride as I therize it would be a nice riding and handling hull- same for the sonic's - because of the sharper v and relatively long "flat" on the sutphen.
But I'm only therozing.
