How about when the engine is off or while it's on the trailer. Does it work properly then or does it still stop at 4 or 5?

It stops quicker when the boat is not running.

I have the same problem on my boat.... I think the point where the cable goes up into the boat the clam shells are tightened down cripming the cable slightly. I've unscrewed the clam shells and operated the drives and it runs smoothy.

I'll fix it when it's time to replace the cable but I'll also replace it with a Morse 33C (Supreme) instead of the std. cables. The supreme operates much better and can withstand a tighter radius turn.

Just a suggestion.

Thank you. I will need to check that out. I will also investigate the Morse.

The spring in the actuator on the drive is probably not strong enough to extend the ram/plunger. It may be the spring or the cable binding. Assuming you have the merc style actuator.
