A stock 454, not beat on, will last forever. My dad has about 1800 hours on the pair in his cruiser.
An alpha, on the other hand, is not enough outdrive for a big block. If you baby it it should last long enough. No WOT out of the hole, and frequent fluid changes, and it should do okay.
Forget about rebuilding the alpha. You can buy a complete new knock-off (mercruiser never patented their design) for like $1200.

I had cruisers with 10 years and over 1,000 hrs. on 454's. I've had fresh motors that didn't last 2 hours........maintainence and proper assembly is everything. Buying used is like putting a wad of cash on the blackjack table. You can play the odds, but you still take the chance of loosing your azz!!!

The Alpha to Bravo conversion is simple. If you can get the boat cheap just pull the motor and put a bravo on it...
The X Dim will be a little deeper but you won't have any more drive problems with a stock 454.
