In NJ they passed a law (not sure if it's still in effect) but, all boats had to have a "full-time muffling device". The did away with the dB readings and just moved over to the muffler crap...

Luckilly, the fun police in our area don't give anyone a hard time unless it's excessive or you do something stupid.

Nope but my entire country has a "muffler law".

We have sound laws on the books in Nebraska but they are not enforced at all.

Outlawcowgirl, the 86 db at 50 feet may not be as bad as you think. I don't know how much louder B-Nauti is now. I can tell you that my Pantera with the 525SC was real loud when I first got it without any muffs and WAY louder than BNauti ever was. The LOTO WP stopped me my first time at LOTO with the Pantera because of noise on the running test. He said I was at 89db going by him. He was floating. I was only running about 3800rpms though. He gave me warning. I added Shotgun Mufflers and it quieted it down a good amount.

Can someone give me a quickie explanation about the difference between 86 and 90 db? it doesn't seem like it would be much different.

Does anyone have any numbers for boats?
(Something like Stock Scarab w. twin 454's at idle = X db)

I am guessing I'm legal with my boat (20' Donzi Minx, 350/350, wet exhaust with no flappers) but I can see twins or even a single BB as being over the legal limit.
I have a Scarab with a stock 454/330 HP and I pulled 95.1 on the DB meter on Lake George(Otis311's home lake). They put the DB meter at the end of a meter stick on your transom and get a reading. Cost me 50 bucks.

Maine has a 90db standing and a 78 dp wot pass at 50 feet. I have never heard of anyone having to do the WOT test.

That's because in order to perform the test you'd have to violate at least one other law in most states, and I'm sure most sensible cops don't want to be within 50' of any boat operated at WOT.

That would be at least 115 DB's on the end of a meter stick.
