Whats going on with Fred @ Trick?
#183
I actually feel some compassion for Fred and Joy - and family..
Her reply is a bit harsh, but look in the mirror. Are you the guy that had an unreasonable request, and expected to have it done overnight just so you could make tomorrow's Poker Run.
Fred, I consider you a friend of many years - keep your chin up.

Expecting to have it done overnight?! YES if the situation calls for it. Ever hear of expediting an order?! Sure he should charge a premium for it but who wouldn't be trying to make a poker run the next day? I have been involved in almost all aspects of this industry and if Fred is so suprised by this then he obviously didn't do his homework. Powerboaters are some of the most demanding customers why? Because a lot (not all) are very successful at business and know how to get things done. They're not push-overs in the business world nor are they gonna be when it comes to their time and toys.
I warn anyone who is considering getting in this industry to do their homework and work at a similar business prior to opening their own. It is NOT the flash and glamour that you may think it is. It is a DEMANDING industry, and I wouldn't have it any other way...

First, I want to introduce myself. My name is Joy. I am the daughter of Fred. I was told that the new convo on OSO was about bashing my father. Having a little fire in my blood after reading this, it has driven me to respond.
First, let me tell you what's it's like trying to serve your breed of customers.
My father began this company as a hobby because he had such a passion for powerboating. It was apart of his life and he has made it a part of mine. He spent countless hours in our home packaging parts until it became successful enough to transform into an actual business. Both of my parents, as well as James, put forth massive amounts of effort into this business. But eventually my father began boating less and less and his passion for boating began to diminish. I never understood why until I began working at Trick. Never in my life have I dealt with so many SPOILED & RUDE middle aged men. So many of the customer's had unrealistic expectations with time frames on anticipated delivery. Especially with custom parts. The BIGGEST thing that surprised me was how people would complain about cost! As you all know, Trick was based on providing its customers with parts for the lowest prices possible. Needless to say, my experiences with a majority of our customers caused me to lose interest in boating as well. There was no fun in it anymore. I thought about boating and associated it with rude individuals.
It baffles me that so many of you are concerned with Trick Marine and "Where's Fred?!" How you could spend countless hours on here bashing my father....MANY OF YOU ARE ALSO PEOPLE THAT I AM SURE MY FATHER UNSELFISHLY GAVE HIS TIME TO GIVE ADVICE OR HELP. Sometimes I wish people could step back and possibly look at the big picture but it doesn't seem to work that way. Instead, you try to add fuel to a fire, stir the pot a little & see how far you can go in bashing my father. Needless to say alot of you seem to forget all the kind things my father has done; taking so much of his time to answer questions of clueless boaters, refunding products because after the part sat unused for months until the customer decided no to used it, but most of all I WATCHED BOTH OF MY PARENTS SPEND HOURS ON END WORKING THEIR ASSES OFF TO MAKE A BUSINESS SUCCEED.
I assure you that those with pending transactions will be taken care of. I know it's hard & you are used to having to wait, but with due time your transaction will be handled properly. Whether it'r refunding your money or shipping you the order originally placed.
Its really bothers me that my parents put forth so much time & effort to have people piss on them. It just goes to show that no matter how hard someone may TRY, you just can'y please people. I guess it would be a cold day in hell to ever think many of you would ever attempt actually be concerned with my father & what might actually be happening.
That's all I have to say. I have been as nice as possible about the situation. To those you know my father and/or mother and appreciate what they have done for you, I extend my thanks. Its customers like you that make dealing with so much bull**** worthwhile.
No, I will not be responding. No, my father will not be responding.
I'm sure this will light the thread on fire for all you fire starters. Have fun with it.
Warmest Regard,
Joy Cecil

Boaters are a different breed. Most own businesses and spend 100's of thousands doing what they love. So you end up with impatient type A personality customers. Some advice Joy, delete your thread or you are going to be looked down on at any poker run or boating event...
Your father made a living on us... And as far as spoiled give me a break...

One of the worst things you can do is turn a hobby into a business!!
Also you can't go into a business with the intention of doing people a favor!!!
I know Fred started with good intentions but it blew up in his face. He was always good to me and I hope he can make good with those with outstanding orders. I knew something was drastically wrong when he did not respond to this thread, and some of the others.
He used to be an Icon on this board. When this is over I hope he will come back!!
Fred, I wish you well!

Joy,
Never been a client, never will. Wouldn't want to stress you out while you make a living off me. Your post offends past and future clients is was totally off the wall.
When you hang out your shingle in any business the clients become a priority. Now if this was a hobby that was done for free/ small profit (like how Fred started) then maybe you could write a letter like that but not if that is your business.
Good luck in your future ventures, maybe get a desk job warehouse where you have no phones, no clients, no hassle and best of all no money!

I have never purchased anything from Fred so I guess without any first-hand experience, my opinion has less value than those of you that have dealt with Fred however........
I applaud Joy for trying to stand up for her father and defending him. Its obvious that something is wrong and the human side of all of us hope that he and his family get through the situation, whatever it might be. I have seen the threads on OSO talking about the personal losses he and his family have suffered so from that perspective, I would be willing to bet that everyone here feels for him and his family and wishes nothing but good for all of them. I know I do.
Joy, while I understand why you posted what you did, I think you did more harm than good. We all know that people who buy these boats (and the stuff that goes with them) are for the most part affluent, and used to getting what they want. They don't mind spending the money, just give them what they bargained for. What they don't want is to spend the money and then get jacked around. They don't want to attempt communication and get no answers. All they want is to be treated like the customer that they are. Very simple.
Joy, most of us pick and choose the business we get into. I know of no business that doesn't have the problems you described in your post; complaining customers, middle-aged rich guys (or girls), uneducated customers, whatever. I'm guessing that no-one held a gun to your fathers head and forced him to open Trick. If the shine has worn off and he no longer has a passion for the business, thats fine. But if you think that customers will stand for no communication, not recieving their orders or confusing meassages, you are kidding yourself. And again, while I understand how you would be pissed by reading this thread, the last thing you should have done was to badmouth the people who have supported Fred in the past.
If I was your father, the first thing I would do is sit down with my daughter Joy and compose an explaination/apology; post it pubically and then go about the business of making everything right. In my world, communication is everything and I see no reason why all of these problems can't be addressed with some simple communication.
Good Luck to all of you

Im glad to see this tread warning others of trick marine. The same thing happened to me a couple of months ago and I ended up having to cancel my order thru my credit card company because my parts did not show up and I could not get any response from Fred or James.
After I cancelled my order with my cc company I started a thread here warning others of my dealings with trick marine. Many of you chimed in with simular complaints then my tread was removed.
I understand that things happen in life but its no excuse for the lack of communication from trick marine. I will NEVER order from trick marine again!!

I'm a dealer for everything Fred sold. I do it as a hobby & for my friends. I've been thinking of starting a real business with it, but at what point does it stop being fun & start being a pain in the a$$?
When you stop letting it be fun. If it ain't fun, it ain't for me.
