Not sure about the cost of the heads. Will they be complete or built by Griffin? You will have extra labor for doing this in the boat. Head gaskets, intake gaskets, new pushrods (different length), Rocker Arms?, Intake Gaskets, ++. My quick math says $7-8k.

More info -
Brand new intake @ rebuild - eaten up
Block needs to be decked so it will seal.
Head was eaten up around #6 water passage.

J. Griffin did checking - even talked to Merc.
Bottom line - all info he found out (myself too) points to Salt Away caused this.

Damn wish this thread would have surfaced about two weeks ago. I just got some Salt-away. I've been using Dawn, but just thought this would be better. Guess not. Anyone want to buy some Salt-Away? LMAO

make sure you electrical system is properly bonded. i know some engines that have used salt away since the product wa first released and the internals look new. could also be a bad casting from GM that didn't have enough nickle in the steel.

What do you mean by "bonded" - tight?
All connections are tight. Batteries are off all the time and boat is in dry storage. Boat is never left in water.
there is only 100 hours on intake & rebuild.

How old are the heads? If the engines were rebuilt the heads are still old.

FYi, I had to replace two of my Merlin heads, they were vintage 1995 castings so I got 13 years out of them and I used salt away all the years I owned it.

Original stock (non-aluminum) heads from 2002. Looked great when motor was rebuilt in '05. Brand new merc intake in '05.
Now heads are ruined from corrosion and intake too.

I am relentless about flushing. Boat NEVER gets put put w/o being flushed (w/ Salt away)

I run my boat in fresh water, out to the gulf, then back in fresh water before pulling it out. I flush at home with fresh water from the hose, then use Salt-Away and leave it in the engine.

If I run the boat after flushing with Salt-Away there is no discolored water from the tail pipes after any length of time sitting.

If I run on the hose without using Salt-Away, let it sit for a week and start again, I get discolored water when I start up.

The hull truth link explained that there was a problem with that engine, and everything else is speculation, and my experience proves that the stuff works.
