What the front end looks like...sans the closed cooling.

What a difference. Now it looks like an engine without all that crap on the front. Looking good. Talk to you soon Chris.

Chris

Very interesting. Why wouldnt you try a really big oil cooler before getting rid of the closed cooling?

Oil temps wern't the problem. Water temps were.
Do you mean try a really big heat exchanger?

The block was getting hot spots in it at the rear two cylinders, and needed more water flow. We will be venting water off the front of the cylinder heads to the headers, and off the back of the intake manifold.

Thought I would bring this thread back to life. I am currently just beginning testing on dual 600 Stage 2 Whipples and have some questions for Chris. I am concerned with running these motors near 6000 rpm. Did you run your motor for extended minutes at max rpms during the poker run. If so, for how long? Do you have any concerns about the valve train at these rpms? My engines have 60 hours on them and the upgrade was just done. So far they run exceptional. I picked up over 12 mph running the same props-so I am now on the rev limiter. :drink:I have just had the props pitched up some and should have more testing done in the next two days. Also impressive is the low end acceleration and mid range pull. The torque of a pair of these engines is unlike anything I have experienced. Pushing a 35' boat at 100 mph now only takes 2/3 throttle! :eek:Previously you had to work for it.

x,
Wow, impressive #'s!:drink: Who did the upgrade? You guys are tempting me to ask for a pair of these for X-mas!:drink:

The Stage 2 upgrade is very simple to install just remove the computers and send them to Whipple and they will reprogram them and send them back with the parts to reroute the water to the inter cooler along with a smaller pulley and a new belt. Dustin told me to prop my boat to run at 5600 but it was Ok to run it at 5800 for short runs, the rev limiter is set at 5850 now. I'm sure Chris has a lot more info on this upgrade or just Call Dustin at Whipple he is a good guy and was a great help when I did mine.
