As a navigator for several teams back in the day I enjoyed that part the most because several races were won on navigation.
I don't think I would have made a trip today to Bimini and back without the old school techniques at least as a back up plan should the electronics go out.
Even to this day people always ask me if I have GPS in my truck and I say no, it would take the fun out of my road trips !
Chart and plot and away I go !

When mapping software really started ramping up i went out and bought a nice big multi feature gps that pretty much for me ended up being just a novelty that tells me how fast I'm going and thats about it, all the other info i already know.

Interesting you say that Rich. When I was in Sarasota last month looking around the Pits I started wondering what the sport would look like if everyone there sold their stuff and bought brand new single engine 100mph spec racers. Then I started wondering what the sport would look like if you made the boats single crew racers i.e. one guy in the boat does everything. Hmmmmmm.

Pull to one side-are you for real?at 200 mph if anything goes wrong or we make a mistake we along with the boat would instantly be chum.it's like a 200 mph coffin.it would be fun to watch you **** yourself in the back seat.

It would certainly work, but then guys like Benny, Michael Seebold, Joey Imprescia, JT, Stevie and other real boat racers would outdrive all the wannabe's......... At that moment there would be a real opportunity for a proper spectator sport. You would have to move fast though because the well heeled guys running back in the pack would immediately start petitioning for a bigger hull, more motors, an exclusive TV show about their team.....you know.... the usual bull sh*t.....
