Young Owners

Guys out there with 20ft+ boats in their early 20's? I shocked some friends and boat owners when I made good on my threat to get one, a 1981 Formula 233LS Thunderbird. What else do you guys have???

getchasum111 03-04-2011 04:43 PM

i had a donzi 18 when i was 16....back when LOTO had a bit less traffic....loved it

endeavor1 03-04-2011 05:08 PM

At 20 I had a 29 Fountain. 22 I bought a 35 fountain, 24 I bought my first Black Thunder 43, then a couple others... :lolhit:

Now Im 27 and have a different Black Thunder but still love boating just as much. Wish i would have known then what i do now. Just continually learn about boats and listen to what others have done.

Chris

I had 211 Four Winns Liberator at 22 years old, man the fun we had on that boat. I wouldn't trade those memories for anything

jmoore1225 03-04-2011 05:22 PM

Damn!!! impressive endeavor....What did you start doing @ that age to make that kinda cash, if I may ask? I'm 26 w/ a 93, 32 fountain had it a couple years now...

1st boat was a 23ft VIP, I was 19 or 20 can't remember...

paul235 03-04-2011 05:46 PM

frankenstein 03-04-2011 05:48 PM

At 18 years old I had a 17 ft Checkmate with a 175 HP. That boat was crazy. When it got to the point where nobody would come out with me anymore, I decided it was time to step up. The good ole days.

302Sport 03-04-2011 05:50 PM

1st, let me give boat ages. 29 was a 91, 35 was a 93, first 43 was an 01 (should have NEVER sold it) 46 was an 02, and the other 43 is a 99.

Job - At age 19 my father secured an interview for me with a Class 1 railroad as a laborer. I was hired and for the next year i swung a sledge and drove spikes into rail ties (sucked :angry-smiley-038:). I then transfered to the transportation side of the company and became a locomotive engineer for the next 4 years. After that, i was hired to be a designated supt. of loco. engineers. Now i just took a promotion to K.C. to work in intermodal logistics for my company. Good pay but not much of a home life....

Its pretty cool to have this thread. Lot of younger guys like myself that have an amazing love for this sport. I admit, i sacrifice alot of other things my friends do to stay in the game, but it is worth it every time i take the boat out.

I don't know if I am allowed to post here since I am 30 now.

I spent the first 5 years of my 20's behind this beast. Then it somehow made it's way down the creek to my brother's house never to return.

Funny story about that pic from last summer - my buddy has a duckblind where we all anchor out - about 95 boats last 4th of July. That was the Saturday morning right before the boats started showing up and we were returning from swapping out his pirate flag with a HUGE gay pride flag. Best $5.95 I ever spent

CigDaze 03-04-2011 09:54 PM

Good thread. This sport's passion is certainly at its highest in our youth. Glad to see so many young people active in the community and enjoying their boats amicably. I'm probably past the focus group for this thread, though not too far removed.

I had a 17' Seat Ray bowrider when I was in college. In 2000 when I was 22 I bought a 21' Baja Hammer. 8 months later I moved into a 2001 25 Outlaw. in 2004, at 26 years old I bought my Cafe, and had finally arrived at the boat that I really wanted all along. That was 7 years ago - hard to believe, but so far so good.

:)

Don't forget everyone's situation is different. Some people at 26 have 2 kids, 100k in student loans, a wife that may or may not be working, a mortgage that is upside down. Or on the flip side there are plenty who have been fortunate enough to possibly have some help along the way that allows them to afford the boats. Also don't forget that money used to be easier to come by!!

Me and my wife were fortunate in that we were dual income/no kids and basically no other significant bills (other than mortgage) so we made the decision that we wanted to get out on the water and spend our 20's boating so that is what we did. 5 years later is seems almost harder to afford the boat now than it did back then!!

ludo73 03-05-2011 07:07 AM

at 17, i actually own a 25 powerplay with twin 300xs's !!

Very well put.

Magic Medicine 03-05-2011 07:24 AM

Had 4-5 Zodiacs when I was a kid on daddy's dime.

24 1997 Checkmate 242 Convincor
27 1999 28' Nordic Heat
28' 1999 Checkmate ZT 280 (500 efi)
30' 1999 32' Sunsation Dominator

Still shopping for the next one, if the economy was better I would have bought last year. I have a soon to be 5 year old son who loves to come out of the boat with his dad and loves to snowmobile in the winter.

alindquist 03-05-2011 07:50 AM

16 had a 16' Sylvan w/ 70hp outboard
20 got a little 16' Larson 1967 w/ an outboard
at 25 bought my 232 cobalt, and I still have it... Now at 32 I'm on the hunt for a 330 or a 370ss but that probably won't happen this summer.

Definitely! well said.

NKissau 03-05-2011 09:18 AM

I had a boat before I had a car, even though it was a 1967 starcraft. Had a few different wakeboard/ski boats right out of highshcool. Bought our 38' Powerquest when I was 24. I'm now 28 and the boats for sale, looking to move into a 42 Fountain/43 Donzi or something similar. Like others have said, my wife and I both have good jobs, we have no kids and we live pretty modestly in order to have the boat. But for us it's worth it.

paul235 03-05-2011 09:18 AM

O I agree Im very thankful for the life I have been given, the hard work sucks but the payoffs alright! I don;t no about you guys but I have a extra savings I stock all winter just for the boating season. It sure is a expensive hobby! I shoulda taken up model trains or somthin:coolcowboy:

nick9671 03-05-2011 09:35 AM

at 24 my first boat was a 1996 scarab 23ft with 350, loved that boat i can't tell you how much partying on lake texoma I did on that boat...... at 26 I sold it then bought a 1998 29' fountain which was my first twin engine boat and I have had it for 3 yrs now as I am turning 29 this year, I think I will hold on to it for 1 more season then looking to step up to a 35' fountain....

Yeah we boated hard until we had my daughter at 26 years old and my boy three years later. Then it was time to build a new house so I sold all the boats except the Whaler while we built our dream house for six years. Now I want to get back into it as my kids are old enough to enjoy memories and do some boating before they go live their lives on their own

rlj676 03-05-2011 10:18 AM

I'd imagine a lot of the guys with nicer boats at younger ages forgo the "nice house", fancy cars etc to keep it going.

My dad convinced me to buy a home before a boat (biggest mistake ever), and now my house has lost a TS Cig in value haha.

Anyways, at 28 I bought a 28 Powerplay, and my goal is to have a 38 PP (or Cig) by 38.

Every time I think I'm gonna sell the boat and buy bigger though I buy a new car (vette, then CTS-V), and I just bought a Harley yesterday. Gotta keep the toys diversified, but by the end of every summer I want the bigger boat.
