So now that we agree that 15W-50 is the way to go, where can we buy it for the equivalent to what Walmart sold the 5qt containers for?? I cant find it anywhere on L.I. Its a rip off at most places.

As for Mobil 1 a good choice would be the Mobil 1 V-twin 20-50W which has a much better wear package in the blend. there are also other good synthetics out there such as Amsoil, etc., that have good blends for marine performance use so try not to be to "penny wise and dollar foolish" in your oil purchasing and use. Just a suggestion.

Is the V-twin 20W-50 available in the 5qt containers? If so, where and whats the price?

The Mobile 1 V-twin oil is actually motor cycle oil for Harleys and is a 20-50w which I prefer for high performance marine engines. It is not sold in 5 qt. jugs as Harleys don't use that much oil at an oil change so I believe its only available in qt. bottles. If you look at those Mobile 1 charts you will see it has the highest zinc and phosphorus levels of any 15-50w or 20-50w synthetic oils Mobile 1 makes other than a straight weight racing oil. If its my engine I am going to use the 20-50w V-twin and not worry about a few bucks more per oil change waiting to find the product at WalMart. Some boaters here on OSO were buying straight Mobile 1 10-40wand not the extended duty 15-50w Mobile 1 that Mobile has discontinued for now.

Default Two of the Best Performance Marine Oils

http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/rd50.aspx

http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/ame.aspx

Second oil has high TBN for soot An corrosion control.

I have used the second one for 15 years 1000 hrs without any tear down and refresh. This is the ultimate test.

I was looking for standard 15w-50, not "Extended Performance" Walmart didnt have standard 10w-40 either. They seem to be stocking the lighter weights which is what the new cars are coming with now, 5w-30 for example. My engine builder prefers the 50wt over the standard 10w-40.

Default Mobil 1 15w50

HERE IS THE ANSWER DIRECTLY FROM MOBIL:

Question:
Will Walmart Carry Mobil 1 15W-50 in 5-Quart Jugs?
Hi. I need to know if the 5-quart jug of Mobil 1 15w-50 is going to be available at Walmart. I've been checking for the last two months and have had no luck. Is the 15w-50 5-quart jug discontinued?

Answer:
While Mobil 1 15W-50 in five-quart bottles isn't currently available at Walmart stores, due to popular request, the product will return to Walmart locations this summer. Expect to begin seeing the bottles at select locations from July through August, with a full nationwide distribution in March 2012.

Alright....I'm going crazy with this. I just picked up a 98 Formula 312 with 454 MAG MPI's in it. I use to run 20w50 Valvoline racing oil in my old boat but someone told me not to run that oil in my Formula. They said to use the 25w40 Mercury high performance oil.

The previous owner was no help to me as he took it to his marina and let them take care of everything.

Any help would be appreciated!

Dave

So being forced to purchase qts, we have a few offers in our area from auto parts stores for 5qts and they throw in a Mobil 1 filter for $37.99. Does anyone know what Mobil 1 oil filter would be for a 2000 HP500? Are they as good as using the Mercury part?
Thanks

Just bought my 97 312 and plan on running Mobil 15-50. Found the 5 gallon jug at Wal Mart in Louisville for $27.
