It seems there may be new information regarding Merc 700SCI maintenance that could significantly alter the value proposition toward Ilmors product.

It seems there is debate about this but If Merc is stating a top end job at 250 hours - thats a significant expense, and it seems at least one guy had valve train issues this early on.
Hmmmmmm....

Interesting. Let's not forget, however, that the Ilmor package costs nearly $20,000 more than the Mercury package. A refresh at any point - suppose 250 hours - is not going to cost something even close to that amount. And, the engine at that point would then be as good as new.
A top end refresh would NOT be good as new - the bottom would have a bunch of hours on it..

They are very competitively priced.
I would have never paid 20K more for an Ilmor.
When I purchased my 710 they were absolutely identical- it was a wash.

Maybe $4,000, but that's MSRP. NOWHERE NEAR a $20k difference. Get your boatbuilder to quote you a real-world price. The Ilmor transmission/drive is also designed to handle much larger loads than the 700NXT.
Ilmor is just starting to see it's rebuild business pick up, after six years of producing engines. Some have come in at over 630 hours, with no dramatic issues.
Here's another set of numbers to consider:
Mercury 700 at WOT - 70 gallons per hour
Ilmor 725 at WOT - 50 gallons per hour
