Another plus to the turbine vs. pistons debate is that the turbines can run a diesel blend - no idea of tuning changes or whatever power losses incurred but it is a standard option.. I am only guessing for a full power run ( like Loto) the boats are running Jet A so nothing is left on the table.
The turbine consume more fuel at lower speeds than pistons - but deliver more relaible BIG power - that's a give and already covered. I bought coloured diesel ( off highway) with delivery for less than $3.00 Gallon - and cost of fuel was up. On other forums someone said that cheap gas (89???)was over $5.00 gallon on the dock & someone else mentioned 114 octane was well over $9.00 gallon to feed the big piston engines. I am surprised it has taken this long really for turbines to become a major player in top end boats. It really hasn't been all that long that big piston power has been reilable. Not too far back, Merc's warrantee on 1000+ hp was basically if it starts there's your warantee completed... which I always thought was the equivalant of buying a supercharged hand grenade and paying someone else big $$$ to pull the pin! |

I never tried to imply that Turbines should replace the Piston engine - just that when ya' look at the service intervals and Hp output it definitely has a place. For every point pro vs con of either power there is a contradiction.....
All I was saying is that piston's do not have the same service/ Overhaul as a turbine when producing over 1200+ hp. I only use 1200 as a mark as I think that is a small version of T53...Boating to me is time on the water - not how much power you have under the hatches and then have the motors pulled for refresh to do it again next weekend John Force's Funny Car race team can build 7000-8000 hp out of a piston engine - probably just shy of double double of what is in the My Way Mystic. I can't see how it's possible to get more power out of the T55 to double the output like the Funny Cars - but the piston engines have made it possible. BUT- the same engine is totally overhauled at least 7-8 times before the average boater with typical production engines has warmed their motors and ready to leave the dock if you were comparing the actual revolution count. Does this tidbit mean anything - probably not to everyone but it is a different angle. It's whatever floats your boat ,Literally, and pushes it along and you are happy with what ya' got. There are some big engines at Loto - majority would probably have just had a refresh or are due for one after the weekend. My Way probably will be loaded up and shipped home and splashed if nothing goes awry today - nature of the turbine. Contradicitng this -John Arruda / Miss Mary Mac blew a turbine and had a fire onboard - does it sell one power over another - not really. Piston lovers would give a 1 up for piston power and turbine lovers would say " Sh*t happens!" If I was putting 1-2 million down on the table for an offshore boat - down time would be a factor in deciding power with 8 weeks of boating/ year. Personally I love unique-ness and the sound of the turbines but i was brought up on BBC's If My way breaks the record is it going to be said that he had the perfect run with the right props and all the details executed perfectly - or just the fact that he bolted 8000hp to the boat and made a pass???? Do you give him credit for what he's built or take it away for the power he's making compared to the next boat? Just sayin.. |
I like the Diesels especially the Cummins they will fit well in a bilge and Diesel fuel is No problem. Here is a drag truck.

There ya go for cantradictions - the live stream from Loto just said My Way will not likely return to the course today due to engine issues

Maybe he is???
|
as bad as fishin - runs on - the runs off - the runs back on - LOL
Like to see another pass and break 210- will Bring David Scott back out for next year |
So My Way just ran 207mph, but got DQ'd for exceeding 40mph in the start box. He then comes right back and makes a beautiful pass, legal start and the damn radar doesn't pick up his speed.
What's the deal with the radar anyway? Why not use timing lights like in drag boat racing, or even an official GPS of some sort? It seems like there's always been accuracy issues with the radar system over the years. |
3rd run, 217 on the gps
|
208!

This is crazy... I feel bad for those guys... No other boats are having that problem.... |
221 mph on the gps in the boat wtf!
|
221?!?!
I really hope the radar starts working better. Anyone make a metallic wrap that stays on @ 220? Guess their graphic guy should be readying the "too fast for radar" sticker for the transom. |
They ran again, 208. Funny it is always 208 when the radar works.

This is crazy... I feel bad for those guys... No other boats are having that problem.... If that boat actually did go over 220 I'm sure he is pleased. I suspect the 221 reading wasnt in the measured distance either, but it went 221 on GPS. Thats no small accomplishment. Congrats to the boat builder and the turbine builder/rigger. Congrats to all those that have accomplished their dream. |

That sux bad.

I am shocked that at a run at this level and the cailiber of rigs, money spent that they are trusting bragging rights to a freagin radar gun??? Look up rules for a Kilo run w/the APBA or UIM. It is on a "surveyed" course w/"certified" timing equipment operated by trained, "Official Crew" only. Course thats why those records are always slower than everywhere else but......, they are real and they are legit. W/the money this event brings to the promoters I would hope this is the last time this happens or the last time these guys show up and abuse their equipment "for fun". Pathetic. |
J.T. Said that the nauti boat gps 226 last year
|
With the money involved for the town and the reputation of the event - would the organizser's not find a better system for the top end boats that are having the issues with the radar not reading.
Not only this weekend, not certain on this, but didn't David Scott and JT's 208 record run register in the neighbourhood of 213-214 on the Nautimarine's onboard GPS NASCAR uses a transponder system so its not like technology has to be invented - transponder in the boat using GPS tracking transmitted wireless to a monitoring station.... that all said if you can make the run a few times and have the guns miss the boat altogether, I guess a boat can have an issue with a puck like transponder - like having it fall off the mount during a run and rolling backwards down the cockpit - 210+ going forwards and 6 backwards at the same time |
Ok maybe 226 on the Nauti

Watching the awards on-line this afternoon, Bill T. said he wasn't in the boat today. His throttle man and John Arruda hammered her.
Yesterday, Bill T. was in the boat. Congrats on the awesome speed runs and not giving up. :drink: |

Please note: John ARRUDA was NOT in the My Way Boat. John Cosker was in the cockpit with Bill Tomlinson's throttleman on all runs today.
Only 2 guys named John have hit the 200+ mph mark at LOTO and Arruda is not one of them. Huge congrats to Bill Tomlinson |
congrats my way 200+ is hauling ass u got to have big balls to run that speed . lot of work lot of money but it has paid off well . u are top gun congrats

It's all about the bragging rights! Everyone runs because it is fun! I ran in 09 and would do it again & intend to do it again.
The fun for me was doing what nobody said my boat would do. Eclipse the class record by 5mph and hold it now for 3 years. |
