News on the crash

http://www.miamiherald.com/2011/11/1...speedboat.html

Raylar 11-13-2011 09:23 PM

Wow!!

So Glad to hear those two guys are for the most part ok after an impact like that!
Nikonmiami, those are some of those most amazing still shots leading up to a Stuff I think anybody has ever seen!

Looks like Warpaint might even qualify as a diving submersible! Based on that crash impact, its quite an affirmation of the strength of their hull.

Lets hope future racing in Key West is absent the crashes and injuries the sport saw this year!

Best Regards,
Ray @ Raylar

10x 11-13-2011 09:29 PM

WOW !!! Glad to hear the guys will survive the crash with non life threatening injuries.

Ona-Mission 11-13-2011 09:35 PM

Holy S*&t!!!!!!!!!

Comanche3Six 11-13-2011 10:24 PM

+1
It'd be neat to see the next couple as it came back out of the water.
Thanks for posting these. Glad to hear they are recovering.

tcelano 11-13-2011 10:29 PM

Wow, those are some amazing shots. You must have had some really high shutter speed to completely stop the props.

How much damage to the boat? Glad to hear the drivers weren't seriously injured.

Captain YARRR 11-13-2011 10:32 PM

Shocking, amazing pics tho

WildThing47 11-13-2011 10:33 PM

44MTI 11-13-2011 10:57 PM

Unbelievable pics, thanks for sharing.
How did the hull hold up.
Glad everyone is doing ok.

Racerngr1 11-14-2011 01:06 AM

Great pics! I would agree with it being cool to see the next series of pics.

Sydwayz 11-14-2011 01:36 AM

I didn't have that kind of zoom, but it looked like it just popped up like a cork afterward. I was told that one of the engine hatches came off, and the winsheild had a large hole punched in it. The boat was riding a little low when towed in, but was still afloat.

boatme 11-14-2011 04:42 AM

wow crazy pics

Who wants it anyother way?

The Design of the Canopy is excellent too, It caught my eye the Instant I saw the boat live.

here is the broken canopy, hull seems fine

SS930 11-14-2011 06:15 AM

FANTASTIC shots Nikon, excellent work!!!

Yet another example of how under-engineered today's canopies are. If anything, they seem to give a false sense of security...

MikeyFIN 11-14-2011 06:30 AM

Actually it's not about how under-engineereed something is built Today or Yesterday but engineered in general. Remember the Apache is Michael Peters "first" and innovative design, at the time he pulled all the stops and the Canopy has a real small (frontal) area, therefore being really safe.
I think many canopydesigners/builders should take notice it doesn't look like an eggshell.

PhantomChaos 11-14-2011 06:34 AM

Looks collapsed to me....in that last pic.

offshoredrillin 11-14-2011 06:41 AM

Great pics Jim, rough week in key west. Glad they are ok!

Looks pretty under-engineered to me, it's completely collapsed!

Yes it might have had small frontal area, but structurally it obviously didn't cut the mustard! It collapsed like that from a 'stuff', imagine what it could of looked like had the boat flipped or rolled at speed? The outcome could have been a lot worse!!! IMO, the racing bodies need to start mandating and enforcing more rigorous and robust canopy design requirements.

After the events from this past week, there's obviously plenty of room for improvement here. If death can easily be prevented it would be silly not to fix the obvious design flaws, especially in light of last week's tragic events.

MikeyFIN 11-14-2011 07:10 AM

IMO there's no amount of glass with reinforcements that stay intact with an impact on water at those speeds. Therefore the only way to make it safer is to limit the area and the angle of attack.

Death Can NOT be easily prevented here there's a big IF there. IMO Not on any of the crashes seen the last 2 years even. Just look at the Class1 flips also.

Sorry Mikey, but that is not Michael Peters' first design. The Cigarette Halter cat was, at least 3 years before he did the Apache project........

TOASTY 11-14-2011 07:38 AM

in order to create strict rule enforcement, you will need $$ on all sides both on circuit side and boat owner side. lets see where the sport will go next...let see how much teams/people really want to go racing on their own dime before they get burnt out on spending. It needs to be done to save lives

Baloney! The rest of the boat looks like it faired very well, the only significant structural failure I see is the canopy. There's no reason this couldn't have been prevented or even minimized by a more robust design (in both layup, polycarbonate thickness and attachment, and overall design).

You're never going to make something fail-proof, but there's obviously plenty of room for improvement here!!!

Panther 11-14-2011 07:53 AM

Just my opinion but if Drag boats can crash and disintegrate at 220 mph I think there's something that can be done better with boats.

At least we agree on something.
Of all the canopies I've seen collapse in the last few years Warpaints got the job done best by the info I've got at the moment and No I haven't seen all the crashes for sure.
