Why is LOTO so great?
#101
We live in KC and started going to LOTO in the mid 60's. Mom and dad sat us kids down in 1970 and proposed buying a small place at the lake. They explained that other vacations, movies, restaurants and extra perks would stop if we bought a cabin. We jumped on the idea and for years every Friday at 5:30 we were in the car headed to "the lake", it became a way of life. As a family we worked and worked on that little house, spent hundreds and hundreds of hours in several boats skiing, tubeing and having fun. Seeing my dad work extra hard at his job to afford and achieve his dream of a lake house had a huge influence on me growing up. Going to the lake kept me out of trouble, taught me responsibility and helped me develop a strong work ethic.
My first job was on an island at the lake, (Hawaiian Island) pumping gas and building docks. I bought a 12' hydroplane with the money I earned. I continued to work at the lake all throughout high school. I graduated to drag boats and spent as much time as I could at the lake. After college my girlfriend (future wife) and I would go every weekend. We did the party cove thing in the 80's. In the mid 80's we sold the cabin and dad and I went together and built a bigger house. In the 90's we had kids and the cycle started over again.
Our kids are now teenagers and have all grown up with the lake. They work hard, get good grades and stay out of trouble. I give the lake a lot of credit for that. Some kids have worked at the lake, one has bought a jet ski with their own money at age 15. His goal is to be a Water Patrol officer just so he can live at the lake.
Its not all about waves, water and stupid people. LOTO is a way of life. Is the water quality better at some other lakes, yes. Do some other lakes have less traffic and waves, yes. Do other lakes have better restaurants, maybe, maybe not. Do other lake have better weather, yes to that too. Has the lake changed for the worse over the years, I guess it depends on your point of view. But it doesn't matter, LOTO is something you either have in your blood or you don't. I suppose in a lot of ways its like Vegas, some people love it, some people hate everything about it.
LOTO is one of a kind. Where else do you have have cruisers, offshore boats, skiers, fishermen, pontoons, jet skis, sailboats, retired people, weekenders and locals all coming together on a 80 year old non corps lake with 55,000 acres of water and 1150 miles of shore line. Sure their are issues, but for the most considering the size and number of people it all works. No one could have predicted what LOTO would become. Their were no city planners to guide it future, it evolved on its own over time and it will continue to evolve. Some will be good and some will be bad.
I just hope my future grand-kids will enjoy it as much as I have.

Dude, the quality of my hull makes zero difference in whatever that sludge/scum ring is that attaches itself to my boat every time I've been there. Something there, probably the semen from all the cashed out condoms floating in party cove, attaches itself to the waterline & it takes some serious effort to get it removed. It ain't my nut either & they aren't my rubbers, nor anyones with me.
I am not sure on the "cheap asses" comment, but I am far from cheap & the lake does have a higher percentage of folks with larger wheelbases than found most lakes.
Taking the jet skis out of the equation is rediclious. That is like saying the lake would be clean if all the septic tanks didn't leach into the lake, it would smooth if there were less cruisers. Duh!
I do fly & it is not safer than driving. It sure is cooler & takes less time than driving does.
back to the question as to why LOTO is so great, well, it isn't. Just because it is popular doesnt make it great. It makes it more convenient to more of the population.
All that being said, every time I have went, I had a good time despite all that stuff that makes me not like LOTO. I simply would not want that all the time. I love Table Rock for all it is & is not. I'm certainly glad it is NOT like Lake of the O.

The only reason that I reply is because much of this is just not true. LOTO is a great place with great people, as is Table Rock. Because you love Table Rock does not make LOTO bad. You are trying to make your candle burn a bit brighter by blowing out others and it just does not work that way. How about starting a "Why is Tablerock so Great" thread. From farm ponds to oceans all water has good and bad, but I guess I choose to look at the good.
LOTO is a dangerous lake. It is the 3rd most dangerous body of water in the US.

It does have Ecoli problems:

My favorite article: http://www.riverfronttimes.com/2005-...ws/ozark-orgy/
MO water patrol incidents
LOTO:http://www.mshp.dps.missouri.gov/WP03/SearchAction
Table Rock:http://www.mshp.dps.missouri.gov/WP03/SearchAction
Nobody is saying you have to love LOTO, the question is what makes it so great.
Now, what makes it great again?

Jason, Why don't you just get over yourself and stay down at Table Rock... I won't go into all of the reasons you couldn't pay me to boat down there but if you like it so much just stay there. Ya know what, tou won't be missed at LOTO. People like you who try and bring up old and tired articles just to prove a non-existing point are a freaking joke. I've read your tired diatribes here and over on MWBP for several years now bashing the lake and they really aren't worth responding to, but to answer the question why is LOTO so great that's easy it's not Table Rock...

The third most dangerous lake moniker was put on lake of the Ozarks in 2006. Look at all you had 6 years ago. Things change in 6 years.
Did you even read the article on E coli before cutting and pasting, or did your haste to support your argument make you paste something that actually supports my argument. For one last time, the goose poop, in certain areas, runs off into the fingers when a strong rain come, and that places bunches of goose poop in the lake. here is the article:
Lake of the Ozarks

LAKE OF THE OZARKS (KMOX) - The Lake of the Ozarks is ready for the Memorial Day crowd this weekend, without the e.coli concerns of years past.
The all clear comes from Department of Natural Resources. Spokeswoman Renee Bungart who says water samples taken over past weeks show low levels of e.coli.
She attributes that to less runoff due to less rainfall and some precautions like signs that read “don’t feed the geese.”
“We want to reduce the number of geese because they can have an effect on the number of e.coli results” said Bungart.
Two beaches are closed however: (not because of e-coli) The Lewis and Clark State Park Beach is undergoing flood repairs and the spillway at the Trail of Tears State Park is undergoing repairs.
The Party Cove article was from 2005. Alot has changed since then. That was back when you had a fast boat, for instance. Can you find any newer articles? That said, alot goes on back in party cove. It is one little tiny finger in a lake with over 1100 miles of shoreline. I bet it was alot cooler when you did have a fast boat, even though it did not turn any heads at LOTO like it may have had at different lakes.
Thank you for linking the accident statistics. On the page that you linked, there were 6 incidents at LOTO:
2 jetskiis hit
6 year old drowns
The "Fountain" spinout
PWC hit a dock
Jet skiis collided
Grounding
At table rock during the same time:
64 year old drowns
boat and PWC collide
Lake of the Ozarks with 6 incidents (2 of them boats)
Tablerock 2 incidents (1 of them boats)
6 to 2. Do you think that lake of the Ozarks, at any given time, has more than 3 times the boat traffic on it? i will bet that it has 10 times the boat traffic at least. If it is 10 times, then statistically Table Rock has over 3 times the accident rate as Lake of the Ozarks. I will bet that ytheer are more like 20 times the boats on Lake of the Ozarks (including jetskiis as you want to do)
That all said, I still think that TableRock is an awesome lake, even if it, statistically is more dangerous than lake of the Ozarks these days. I know several people that boat there and love the clean water and the solitude that the lake can give you. While I don't think that Table rock is bad at all, I do like the energy at Lake of the Ozarks.
I am certain that you will not agree with any of this, but thats OK. I have know alot of folks with alot bigger egos bring their boat to LOTO and then go home with their tail between their legs never to return because they did not like something. It is human nature for some. besides that, Table Rock is closer for you, and you can stay at your dads boat. That is great. That said, that does not make LOTO bad.
Far anybody reading this, I don't mean to be a prick, I just don't want to sit back and read all of the rubbish that has been posted about LOTO. It would be a bit like watching somebody "bullying" withjout doing anything.

What makes LOTO so great? That is the question yet to be answered. Let me take a stab at it try to "get over myself"

& actually answer the question that has been asked.LOTO has a multitude of bars & restaurants on the water along with a fantastic nightlife. There are many tourist attractions on & around the lake. The scenery can be quite picturesque in the fall when the trees start their changes. There is an abundance of golf to be played on many fine courses. The shoreline is littered with homes of every type, mansions to condos to trailer houses & everything in between.
There, noting negative & an actual answer to the question. Fond memories & anecdotal stories don't make a lake great for someone who has never been. Tell them WHY THE LAKE IS SO GREAT!!!! Make them understand why it is worth getting all upset over!
One more thing.......Table Rock is great.

** I stand corrected. Tango, you did answer this question early on in the thread. I guess I got all lost in TRL505's smack talk I forgot or neglected to see what you had wrote. ** My apologies.

No problem. Table Rock is a great lake, there is no doubt about it. If for some reason you ever make it back up to Lake of the Ozarks drop me a line and maybe we can cross paths. First round is on me!

I think the difference between LOTO and Table Rock is pretty simple... LOTO is a destination for people that enjoy performance boating and all that goes with it and Table Rock is just another COE lake where people boat and fish. COE lakes are located all over MO, AR, KY, TN to list a few and are all about the same but there is only one LOTO.
I've been to Table Rock many times in the past and it is nice and have friends that have boat's and places down there and they like it. Unfortunately most of the boating down there that I've seen is going out from the Marina a mile or two and rafting up or heading a couple more miles to the cliffs... For some that's wonderful and peaceful if it's your cup of tea but for a lot of us it's not.
