Re: 21 Challenger People

Jeff, this one was built in 1985, all of the Shadow's were built in Lake Hoptacong, I think they stopped building them around 1990 though. I think the one you are talking about was pulled out of the Shadow molds (Linder/Luhrs) in NJ??? The deck & cockpit/dash appear to be changed from the Orig. Shadow molds, Scream & Fly member "Beer 30" used to own it, he might be able to fill in the Gaps. BTW I think the Shadow had the fastest bottom of all of the challenger/Shadow/Superboats etc. IMHO.

Original Shadows were built from 1981 through 1984...after that there was an break up in the parnership and the molds were "leased out" to a 3rd party with limited talent and no design ability. Many of the original materials were compromised and the molds were badly worn to boot.

I was wondering if Mr. Linder has any idea how many "true" Challenger21's were made? Or even better, how many in what years?

A guy down here on the St John's River had a 21 Hammond for years and may still have it. He did have a 900hp motor in it. Sounded really nasty!

Powerboat did a test with Twin Outboards on the Shadow 21. Bob Nordskog said few boats could handle the power and weight as the Shadow....But he said although a handful, this boat could handle it well.

That was my demo/play hull back when we were building them, and it ran like a bus for me at about 85 mph all day long in fresh water ( and won a handful of races)....... I recall the Powerboat test speeds were somewhat lower (in salt water) and I never could figure that out. It did take a careful hand to set the trim and tabs, maybe they didn't have the time to try for optimum.

Challenger

I was told by a friend to sign on and look, brings a tear to my eye there's me old summer blaster for many many summers. I bought this boat from Dave at Vans auto body in the early 90's probably 91. Prior to that it was owned by John Brophy who worked at clarks landing, before that a DR. owned it and it said "THERAPY" on the side of it.... Original owner was out of Lake hopatcong...Never got the old pictures prior to my owning it but Dave had them back to when it was Therapy... a good friend Chris Orock who died re did all the stringers, put in those Knees you probably still have off the transom and put the stainless rods down to the stringers too. I'll look for my pics but I had that boat at 84 with me and one other 22 yr old in it light on fuel with a garmen. I miss that boat dearly. I'll try and find some of my old pictures. I had Joe at Broadway signs make me that Challenger sticker thats on the side off an old black and white photo of the original sticker with that killer cleaver style prop
Between Dave and I that boat had blackmax 200, and 225 on the back. Had a 2.4 carbed motor on it, had a 2.5 offshore on there had a fuel injected piece on there and the Mod Vp.. With that Jack plate that boat ran like No Effin Tomorrow.

KBird,
You may be happy to hear that this boat is for sale a Fuller's Marine in Pine Beach NJ. The owner works part time there. The boat is in great condition-new upholstry (Sp?), painted deck-to match original gel coat. He's asking $5,500. w/out engine or trailer.

bill3077 11-24-2011 01:13 PM

I am a huge Challenger fan. I ran with the Heritage team on Long Island in the early days and co-piloted Don Geed's boat. Also had my own which was supposedly the only all BALSA(even the transom) boat they built. Before that we all had 16 foot Superboats or a reasonable facsimily and ran around going as fast as we could. John Cohen made a hell of a boat and still does!
I broke the balsa transom on the Challenger after having my blown up 235 Johnson rebuilt by Elly(sp?) Langdon( If anyone remembers him, what an engine builder). Boat ran real fast and very light but transom went by by. I really loved driving the twin engine boat. We built out alot of challengers at Heritage back in the day. Don Geed and John Biegler owned the place. I just hung out there and did some rigging. We would rig boats at night after our "real" jobs, then go to Howard Johnsons for dinner. Joey DeTorre, George Linder and his dad, Don, John and I, good times. Ah the old days!
Maybe I need to pick myself up a 21 to play with, it would have to be a twin engine boat.

TeamSaris 11-24-2011 08:35 PM

Mine had a balsa transom.
Mines for sale on scream and fly, pm me if interested....the only perfect one left!

i think most of the original challengers were all balsa.if the boats were rigged properly that was never a problem.

That was my "Blue" 21' Challenger around 1989-1991.

I had started looking for my old 1979 blue 21' Challenger back a few years ago and finally discovered George Linder had it. Here is some history about it.

I first came upon it when some fellow was driving it around Long Island sound and it had a 300 Evenrude on it. I watched him having a horrible time driving it with a lot of chine walking at any planing speed. Having prior owned a 1979 21' Superboat that Joey Imprescia had set up, I knew what was wrong so I offered to buy it and was lucky enough to get it that same day. After raising the motor higher and higher I had it well into the 80's and running straight as an arrow with an Omc Raker prop. The boat was driven mainly around the Long Island North Shore area back then.

I once was confronted with 6'-7' seas between Block Island and Montauk. Having driven over on a calm (1.5'-2' seas) sunny morning with a friend for lunch, we had no idea a storm was rolling in from the north east. When returning later I had to navigate between extremely high waves for an hour or more where we could not see over the waves in front or back of us. Once the seas lowered to about 4' I (thankfully) had no trouble running on the tops as long as we both remained standing with knees bent. It was a very well built boat thankfully. I will never forget that day and neither will my friend.:drink:
