But I am sorry, no matter how respected a driver may be that type of crap is what is giving this sport a black eye. Look at it this way, take a handful of go fast haters turn them loose on YouTube, and they will take those two videos in conjunction with the unfortunate accidents of recent and it really makes us (go fast boaters) look bad to anyone looking in from the outside. |

Same boat, different video.........Bill Pyburn, Pure Platinum 388 Skater. That guy probably has more seat time at 150+ than anyone on the poker run circuit, not saying something couldn't happened but the guy has plenty of experience. So many people have been so quick to blame the spectator boats for this accident...it's only a dumb luck that this guy didn't kill anyone. Do me a favor...next time this guy takes a boat out, let me know, because I don't want myself, my family or my friends on the same water. This was ridiculous. |

A number of us on this board raised the issue of Poker Run safety and self-examination in the wake of Dale Earnhart's death in 2001. There have been lots of good points raised in the ensuing twelve years, particularly after the inevitable close calls and tragedies. Quite a few organizers stepped up and implemented common-sense guidelines, and some of them have even enforced them. The problem lies in the law of large numbers (lots of runs + lots of boats + higher speeds = accidents will happen). Add to this the influx of more and more seriously fast boats and the issue gets even tougher. I'll say it for the millionth time: Safety is not a collection of rules; it is an attitude. Some people have it; some don't. I think that it's safe to say that (for what it's worth) we are all relieved that this happened out in the open, as opposed to while cutting through the spectator fleet or doing a fly-by. Think about THAT one for a while... Condolences to the friends and families. Sounds like these were a couple of really nice guys. |
tomtbone1993, I'd be surprised if he responded. A lot of people on the internet would try to shame him even if he had a good reason. A guy can make a million good choices but if they make a bad choice or two, people on here wanna try to crucify them. No need to call him out. He's an adult, knows what happened, and is probably not happy with how a lot of things unfolded on the poker run.

No excuse for that kind of stupidity... What if somebody was swimming next to the boat.. Or his engine blew and pulled to one side, or broke a prop, broke a drive, etc..
Grow up and drive like a responsible human being.. Stupid. |
Like drinking and driving, nothing will change until consequences increase to the necessary level. Years ago many of us used to enjoy several drinks then weave our way home. Mishaps were called drunk driving "accidents". Then the Mad Mothers changed society's viewpoint and courtrooms now view drunk driving mishaps as premeditated acts. Same will happen here. If the best minds don't figure this out either poker runs will stop or a lot of deep pockets will become shallow indeed. Or die also.
