How many of you occasionally boat alone?
My wife doesn't always want to go out when I do and if there is no one else around to tag along I go alone. I have a system that I have used for years that works where as I can launch, dock and retrieve my boat by my self...been doing it for years.
I always keep a PFD within arms reach and if I am "running" I always wear a vest. Anyway...she thinks I am crazy. I always tell some one when I am leaving, where I will be generally and when I expect to return...common sense stuff. Any of you guys do this or am I nuts? LOL:evilb: |
I go alone quite a bit, don't see any problem with it.
I do the majority of my boating in the Cigarette alone. Usually meet up with other friends while on the water. My wife has long lost interest in big speeds but she does like cruising in our Pachanga with the dog. I've grown used to it and really do not enjoy having a boat load. I like how the boat handles when light much better, can run as hard as I want and don't have to worry about others trashing the boat. Friends bust me on it and always ask for rides but I don't care, would rather roll with my One Man Wolf Pack! lol!
Boating alone wouldn't bother at all, the Wife loves being in the boat so much I 'd never get away from the dock without her, not unless I wanted to be in the dog house when I got home, but I don't see anything wrong with it, boating is great.

I have a good system to launch and retrieve. I always wear a self inflating PFD and use the ignition kill teather. I see no problems with it. Generally the boaters I've encountered who can operate alone are pretty competent mariners.
I boat alone alot. I think I am going to install a tether switch though.
Being schizophrenic I (we) are never really alone:lolhit:
90 % of the time I'm alone. Kids are older and its not really the wifes thing. People are amazed that I can launch and retrieve quicker than they can with people helping.

I use to be gone for days myself. I would get on the boat Thursday night or Friday afternoon and just bounce around the SW end of lake Erie and just go wherever my boat took me. I absolutely loved it and was much easier to do when i was in my early thirties. I still get out by myself from time to time and have no prob launching and retrieving or docking alone. Like you said you develop a system and its funny when people are with me on the boat now they kinda get in the way because i got so good at doing things solo. My GF tells ne she feels like she should be doing something but i seem to get it done better if she keeps clear. I always have to tell her I'm just use to it from having done it that way so long lol. You do have to conduct yourself differently when your out on your own, maybe be a little more cautious or hyper aware and make sure things like kill switch and pfds are used. Know your limitations, it reminds of a story that was posted here about ten years ago. Guy was in some kinda hot 24/7 hull, lost control and got ejected with no kill switch, boat ended up a smoking pinpoint on the horizon on some beach with him floating in the middle of the bay. Those kinda things echo in my head and keep me from taking risks alone (or most any other time) |
I do it also, heck when we go to the Bahamas 150 miles out I prefer to go it alone, better to send the wife and her friends over by plane, then I don't have to worry about how rough it is. Did it 3 times this summer myself. For normal boating I only do it if i am working on the boat/engines or testing something, no trouble finding friends to go out with here. But i do enjoy the quiet being out there alone.
I love being out on the boat by myself. I figuratively call it "church" as it's my time to take it "all" in; life, and in particular my life. (And be thankful for such.)
Alternatively, I find myself in the car/truck alone almost all the time, and cherish the opportunity to have a passenger. |
I like going out alone from time to time...use to a lot more often when I didn't live on the water LOL. something about running alone that calms me down and helps me unwind and relax...stress relief for sure!!! even if it's at 70+mph, the sound of big blocks at 3500+ or screaming outboards is soothing to me:D
I have always gone out alone. Used to be gone for a few days bouncing around from place to place. I always wear a pfd and tether with or without passengers. Bigger boats can be intimidating for some to launch and retrieve solo but I have a system that makes it look easy lol.
Going out in an hour to put the steering pump on and heading out alone for a few hours. :drink::drink::drink: |

Get a boating girlfriend
You know what they say. If you feed your man at home he wouldn't go out to eat. lol |
I've been out alone plenty. Luckily my wife loves the boat but she does work 3 days a week and I have definitely went out on boat while she was at work. A lot of times I go run around a bit then just shut it down and drift around relaxing!!
If my wife wants to stay on land, I go anyways. Don't have enough sunny weekends around here anyways. Mine is easy to launch and to come back to dock, I just use an extension pole with the hook and I have no problem.
Oh yeah forgot to mention. Mine is easy to launch by itself. Hit 2 switches and watch lift go down!! Lol
I used to take my stv or hst out by myself all the time. At a 100mph just ripping it up letting the 2.5 wind...that is an awesome feeling. Of course that was on inland lakes in MN. I always seemed to meet someone out on the lakes...always enjoyed checking out their boats and talking about them nomatter what they were. My cat is a little different story. It gets interesting around the docks with single in a 28 with a 34 pitch prop...nice to have atleast one person with...preferably big tits, and of course female.
I like having friends out, but some of my favorite runs are solo sunset cruses when it is nice and flat, and she can stretch her legs...
Absolutely
Yep. I guess I'm somewhat of a professional lone wolf, as I do many runs solo, whether its in the boats, the convertible, or on the motorcycles. My friends, in fact, do actually call me Lone Wolf lol
Possibly 30% of the time I go alone wearing life jacket and lanyard, just in case. It's been that case for over four decades. You can't plan a trip with your wife always, hehe. Friends can be flaky at times too.
Dont have many true friends and the ones i have always want somthing from me so the big boat is still in pieces and the small boat when i use it im usually with some strange chick or alone..i also have a system i use to unload and load the boat..i can have my donzi on the trailer in less than a minute ,,,
If I went out and did not take her she would kick my ass! My wife is a boating nut.
Yes I do go out alone sometimes. My girlfriend works second shift and some weekends and she is usually who I go with. I find as I get older my buddies have familys and other obligations and arent a phone call away like they used to be. Although I like the company of a good friend I also appreciate being out there just me and the big blocks
Going out a lone is very relaxing even if it`s for and hour or two.
Yep tend to go out solo alot. When I get a hair to jump in and go, I don't want to wait for people to get here LOL. I just roll.

I used to when I had a smaller, easier to trailer alone type boat. The Nordic is a bit too much for me by my self on my ramp i frequent. She likes a bit of throttle to sit her happy. Now, if I had a slip :)
I'll be going out alone tomorrow. I really do enjoy running the boat by myself. As for launching and retrieving, even when my wife goes along, I'm still "alone" so I have it down to a science :evilb:
I enjoy time out alone. My 292 is on a lift that has a remote control which makes it a breeze to go solo. My wife and daughter love boating, just not running too fast in the rough. My time alone is a chance to push the 292 in rough water and has really helped with my driving. I have over 320 hours behind the wheel of this boat and those times alone have given me great experience pushing the limits. As said before, it is a great stress reliever. It is the definition of FREEDOM!
As Howard Arneson once said; "its a vacuum cleaner for the mind"
My wife and kids want me to get a cruiser, they are not happy with speed combined with waves ,they just don't enjoy it. They do love boating, but anyways as mentioned before it is very easy around here to find someone to come along. I am not getting a cruiser, too boring!

Prob go out alone later today, "It's too cold to go boating"
However it also fun to watch her back the trailer. Can hit everything but the water. :lolhit: |
There is a type of peace that I get by going for a ride alone. My girl calls it " Getting my ya ya;s out" . She tells me to be careful .
When we had the Nordic in rack storage I did it all the time. Being on the water is like a mini-vacation without the hassle, it just clears my mind. I also enjoyed just going down to the boat with no intentions of going out and just fussing with a thing or two...tighten this, polish that, check out this, look at that.
I wake up hours before any of my family, go out for a few hours, then back on the lift. I also have a system for pulling into the docks. I get the bumpers out 300 yards from the dock, set the lines and throw them into the cockpit where I can reach them both.
I'm definitely just has happy running by myself as having a full crew. Like others have said above, don't have to worry about it being too rough or going too fast. On LOTO, it is nice to have a co-pilot to watch for traffic and watch the gauges. I agree with the "church" statement above as well. Running the boat pretty much takes my mind off everything else. I always wear a kill switch (around the wrist) since Tres told me most insurances will not cover damage caused my boat if I were thrown out and the boat hits someone/something else. |

I prefer to run My Skater alone,I always have People asking for rides but really don't want the liability of any Passengers in that Boat running at high speeds that's why I took out the rear seat and put in the race hatch,The Fountain on the other hand is the Family Boat.
