That's surprising. I've never been in a 39 Cig but own a 382 Formula with 600's. It's a great boat and rides very well. After we got the 43 ZR, we could not believe how much smoother of a ride esp in rough water than the 382. Of course it's 5 ft longer but I would have thought a 39 Cig would be worlds ahead of the Formula in terms of handling and smoothness do the ride. Not sure how many people on here have ridden in a 43 ZR, but it really is an extremely smooth & solid boat. In my opinion (of course I'm biased) it's one of the better looking boats out there. I just hope Donzi comes back but as of right now, it doesn't look like it will anytime soon.

I've never been on a 382. My Cigarette experience is limited to an '80's model 38 Top Gun that Tommy Hoffstetter and I took out when he worked for Tres Martin's Dad Ralph at Everglades Marine. I always used that Top Gun as the high water mark until Tommy called me one day and we went for a ride in a Apache 41 in solid 6 foot seas. Now that is my "High Water Mark".
Jason Ventura is doing a re-fit at Brand X of the 47 Apache Broken Arrow and I am going to try to get out on that one before they let the new owner have it. Jason said it's a "Pig" in that even with trip 1500 Chiefs it will not break 90....but it rides like a cloud. I think it displaces about 12K LBs so it should!! Anyway...the 382/Top Gun owner told me his comparisons were made on two different trips between Miami and Cape Coral thru the Keys in the winter. That trip can deliver anything from 6-8' Gulfstream Back Breakers to 2' or less rounding the peninsula off of Dry Tortugas so he probably had a good mix. He's a decent size plumbing contractor in SW Florida so someone on OSO might know him. I think he's into big Skaters now since he likes that 150 MPH plus adrenaline rush!! |
My dream was to own a Formula ended up with an Apache. One of my first runs was up to the mouth of lake Hurron. It a rough area on a calm day and is like a washing machine waves from every direction. It turned out to be a rougher than usual day. Was running about 40 45. A 353 or longer Formula pased about 5mph or less. Three girls in the back were bouncing up to the top of there bikini bottoms. My son gave me a dumbfounded look we were not using our knees to absorb any bouncing or are toes. The only thing felt were vibrations from the engines. Fixed that later with some industral mats like used on concreet floors in machine shops.
I hit the throttles to match thier speed no change in my boats attitude or feel. Did notice I started to see air under the ladys butts bouncig almost out of there seats. My son gave me another dumb look. About the same time the Formula slowed down. Totaly supprised me |
His was twins, not the one that cracked, his name is John... local here and Florida too I think he takes it..

Twin 700's or was his the "007" that cracked over the wave in Cali? We've got triple 700's (built to just under 750hp each) and boat will run 120 with light load and 110+ all day

Sprink, Do you have access to that video of Broken Arrow running some rough water with Tommy aboard?
Thanks Ed |
Pretty much how it is, its not that the Formula and other brands cant do the job, but it is NOT the same ride..
