Livorsi vs Autometer
So what's the deal here? I see a lot of guys talking down on Livorsi and recommending Autometer. I just talked to a salesman today that works for a company that just sells gauges and he said that the Livorsi were re-branded autometer gauges.
I'm going to be ordering gauges either tomorrow of first of next week. I want black carbon fiber faces with red rings...It looks like I can get the Livorsi with colored rims and not have to order bezels like I would have to do for the Autometer |
If you are a salesman, don't take this the wrong way, but many today talk smack and don't really know.
If it really matters, find someone deeper in a company that has a better chance of knowing. I'm from the auto repair industry, so my main experience is from reps and salespeople selling parts. |
Livorsi buy there internal parts from autometer just like everyone else.
|
correct, I had one livorsi apart ,and found :autometer print inside the gauge ...
|
I am very interested in learning about gauges myself. Auto meter is looking like a better option every day.
I have personally seen 3 close friends have problems with new Livorsi gauges purchased within the past year. The gauges were defective out of the box. They all had to send new gauges back for warranty repair. They also complained of bad customer service from Livorsi. |
It's definitely not the same company it used to be. Probably related to them being bought out by CompX. I will never use them again after my last experience a year ago. Absolutely terrible customer service, and zero accountability.
|
When it was time for me to do gauges in my formula I researched between livorsi and auto meter. Biggest complaint on livorsi is needles fade fast. I chose the automated and bought from Bill at diamond. His customer service is top notch. I loved the gauges they looked great.
|
So why are there so many problems with Livorsi and not Autometer? Is Livorsi just using their own needles and face plates on Autometer gauges? Something isnt adding up. Is it just that far more people use Livorsi, in return there are more issues being reported?
|
From my understanding older guages were autometer, newer ones are livorsis own that were imported. I believe li orsi has the rights to use many of the brand boat names in order to personalize them more. (Not 100% sure though). My experiance has been awesome w autometer, they repair their own equipment and turnaround was fast and very reasonable. I redid all the ones in my tiger and autometer put the new monster bezels on for about 10 per gauge.

BTW...Ed at Mike's old company stayed on the phone while I was installing a new throttle package I had just purchased from them and I had questions during the install. He stayed on and walked me through it. Besides being an excellent product, just that interaction alone sold me on their products and they had yet another raving fan. |
Livorsi does not crimp the gauge rim on far enough. If you overtighten a Livorsi gauge the rim and glass pop right off... Big pile of overpriced ****.
You can tighten an autometer all day long and never have a problem. If you go with Livorsi do yourself a favor and fill the back side of the rim with 5200 where it meets the gauge body. You wont see it installed but that way you can mount them tight enough to where they are firm and not moving around in your dash. Also it is interesting to note Livorsi gauges made for Cigarette have the correct crimp on the rim just like Autometer... So the gauges Livorsi sells to us are sub standard ones.... |
Hello this is Mike Livorsi. There are so many things wrong with this thread I wont even begin to comment. I can promise you if you call or email me I will take care of any problems personally as I have always done in the past.

I recently had a very good experience with Livorsi. Have 4 speedos in my DCB and the pucks batteries died. Livorsi took care of me with fair price on new technology powered antennas and rebuilt my speedos to current technology for a very reasonable cost. They turned them around very quickly. Good experience from my perspective. Of course wish I never had to do it to begin with but technology changes.....

Re did my dash in the P29 last winter and just made some more modification this year like the Shifters and Throttles. Did over tighten the hour meters and the glass and face moved around but sent back and got them taken care of really quick. Switched from Auto's and really like the product.

Good to see Mike Jumped in. Kudos to you sir. It's off topic and I'm not biased on brands but where does Gaffrig fall into place? Excuse
My ignorance as I just don't have any knowledge on the different brands. Gaffrig also get It's parts from autometer? Not to hijack. |

Best Regards, Mike Livorsi 847-752-2710 [email protected] Seeing the 4 new Livorsi gauges I ordered was just the same as the others, I came to the conclusion your not crimping the rim on the gauge far enough. To fix this so we could take our boat to Key West I filled the back side of the gauge rim with 5200 and let it dry, when I mounted the gauges I could mount them tight enough where they were not moving in the dash and the rim stayed on!!! While on our way to Key West we stopped at the Cigarette factory for the "Tour" I became interested in the quality of the Cigarette gauges because surly Cigarette is not putting up with tightening a gauge by hand and having the rim and glass pop off. Sure enough, every Livorsi Gauge I could find there had the same full crimp on the rim just like the Autometers...... If you truly care about this post please fix the assembly tooling or QC before your gauges ship out. Now they do work great and look awesome, I'm not sure if I would buy Livorsi again at this point. If Autometer made a Carbon Fiber gauge I would most definitely not buy them again |
If you look close at this picture you can see where I used the 5200 on the gauges. You can see the HUGE gap from the rim and the gauge body... Autometer does not have this gap and why they have no problems with the rim and glass coming off.

You gotta know who to talk to, Fred at Livorsi always returns my emails and calls. I sent some back to be tested and rebuilt and they came back nice and new.
Autometer has a small selection. I wanted red face white lettering, no problem @ Livorsi . Right now the boat fund is low so its a couple gauges at a time but one day they`ll be all new :lolhit: http://33outlaw.zenfolio.com/img/s10...64091744-4.jpg |
Looks great! But if I'm spending $2500 I should get good gauges from the get go.... Not knowing anyone...

I have no experience with livorsi gauges. But, my boat had the old Gaffrig gauges with the warning lights built in. Other than being old, and the lenses showing some cracking after prob 14-15 years, they still all worked fine. I then decided I wanted to replace them all. I priced all new Autometer marine pro comp vs the livorsi, and the autometer stuff was much cheaper. I was content with the silver face/chrome race rim they offered. Livorsi does have a much wider selection of colors and styles. I have had no trouble with any of the 15 Autometer gauges in my boat, or any I have bought for my cars in the past, or in my last boat. They all simply worked fine, and held up fine. No cracking of lenses, no falling apart, no erratic readings, etc. So basically, I am a happy autometer customer. |
Also a happy auotmeter customer. I also went this route due to cost and when boating on a budget sometimes you don't have a choice! The one experience I did have with livorsi was when I bought my prop slip gauge used and had to have the rim replaced with a white one. Sent the gauge in and had it back in a week!

Not all pretty yet but, I went with the chrome bezel/silver face autometer "pro comp marine" too.
Just got done drilling this dash console for my pantera. http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...ps88aca7bd.jpg http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...ps4dc5b3f1.jpg |
I have original Livorsi gauges with a little needle fade no rim fade and all work normally with no movement. I put a towel over them every time I stop and still got a little needle fade. Livorsi advertised a new speedo that is Smart Craft compatible. Does that mean you can cycle through functions like batt voltage, water pressure, etc, on that little screen at the bottom of the gauge face of that new product? Anybody have experience with that? Does Autometer sell something like that? Would be cool if it worked like my ski boat does by just pushing a button to cycle through all vital functions.
|
Yes, autometer has an 8 function speedo. Little digital screen at the bottom.
|
I don't have a dog in this fight, but out of coincidence I placed a call to livorsi this afternoon inquiring about gauges and a dash panel update for my 02 Fountain. Fred at livorsi asked me to send a pic of my dash. I did, and buy the end of business today he had me prices for a dash, gauges, and controls, along with pics of dash updates for fountains that fit almost exactly to the theme of my boat. Again, I don't own the product, but could not have asked for better initial customer service.
|
I also have a set of livorsi's with loose glass and faded needles. I called last year to see if I could send them to them to get new needles and was told no. I would have to buy new gauges. I called and spoke with Fred last week and he told me they would fix my gauges for a fee. I'm not sure what has changed... But I like it! I was told 2 weeks to fix and ship back.
I also put my gauges on finger tight, and they moved to easy. So I just gave them a small bump with the socket. They still move rather easy.... But not unless ya grab them. There has to be a better way to attach these things. |
That is interesting, because when I CALLED on the phone about 3 weeks ago, they said they were no longer rebuilding gauges and updating them like they did. I wonder what the actual story is?

Livorsi showed zero interest in helping me or trying to work with me in any way over a speedometer that started leaking at two years old. They wanted some ridiculous amount of money to fix it. I replaced it with a used one. The original still sits in the garage as a reminder of the crappy customer service. I've mentioned this before here. I didn't expect a free repair; Just anything to show they cared.
|
As I said in a previous response. I will personally fix all your concerns but if I don't know about them I cannot fix them. Please email me or give me a call.

I'm sorry .... They did not say it would be free. I have no idea why I typed that... But I be leave it was very affordable
|
I did a complete dash from Livorsi no problem all still working fine!!The price&service was good also!
|
Mike, can you comment on what MMB is referring to with the crimping?

Best Regards Mike Livorsi 847-752-2710 [email protected] Wouldn't it just make more sense to ship better product from the start? Still trying to understand why I should use your product? |
talked to another member up here wanting to go with Livorsi gauges. I heard that they had a few issues here and there thru out a couple of years. I have been using Auto Meter for the past 5 years so what is the current quality of the Livorsi gauges ? Any issues lately ? I figured there would be a thread up here but really can't find anything else but this one in a search. Any other threads about who's gauges including Livorsi are good or bad currently. THX

I've got a dash full of Livorsi from restoration in 2006. No problems here.

I emailed Livorsi for a new dash panel and was surprised to hear they only do carbon fiber dash panels despite what their website said. I do not like the carbon fiber look however. They have since edited a portion of the website now as I pointed it out to them that their site stated they can make them out of other materials but it still states they do aluminum in their dash designer. Pretty bummed they couldn't help me out as I had already purchased some of their gauges and wanted to do the whole thing with their product... The price I was quoted for a carbon fiber one was astronomical in my opinion.
|
ive heard they are both made at the same factory. only difference really is livorsi has cooler color combos and are a little more fancy looking. and they have the deutch connectors and you need to rewire your dash if you have an older boat to work for the connectors. autometers are still the wire bolts on the backside
