Fall River Ma is a great place for a race!

I didn't want to hijack a good thread about a terrific possible event . But any place is a good place for a race Mike . As to being poor, we ran in Detroit this year which was like armageddon and it turned out to be a terrific event . The gas pumps were welded down with steel bars for petes sake.
If the permitting goes through and we can race by the Battleship Mass, then out , how cool would that be. Let's be positive here. You are from down there Mike , don't you want to see a race site come to our area? I DO! And my friends do. And your friends do too. Don't poo poo it.
The People in Detroit brought in a race to help revitalize the area , one might help Fall River a bit too. Not to mention another opportunity, close to home, to go out and get Johnny wet and get our ya ya's out racing with our friends in OPA. BTW, your new Powerplay would be a terrific safety boat .
Peace Out. Brian W

Id love to see a race here, but who pays for the police and ems details? The city won't. Where would the dry pits be? The roadways by the entire waterfront are under heavy construction. And the coast guard has denied the permit several times before. I work here and loved in the city for 28 years. I grew up boating here, the city has no interest in supporting an event like this. They don't even have the city's own waterfront festival anymore. I hope someone pulls something together but won't be getting my hopes up

TeamSaris 11-11-2014 08:02 AM

Team Saris will be there. Really surprised in some of the attitudes people are having. Instead of bashing it, or spreading rumors, be supportive.

Unlimited jd 11-11-2014 08:33 AM

Johnny it's reality. Come visit for a weekend, you and your dad or whole family are welcome to stay at my house. Come check it out and meet the people. I'll bring you door to door to the city councilors homes. I know them all. If you think you can persuade them to assist, by all means I'll help you. But just FYI, the city is several million in the hole right now , not including the unfunded police and fire over time budgets and un funded pension liability of 300 million. The powers at be have no interest in supporting this. BUT there are other communities on the same bay that I feel would be better if the efforts were aimed there. No bs open invite come check it out.

TeamSaris 11-11-2014 08:44 AM

I plan on bringing the Kryptonite down for some lobstahhh with Brian this year. Ill let you know when.
Gotta say though....No Way its worse than Detroit. And that was a great race.
In stead of saying how it wont happen, give Smitty a ring, ask how you can help make it happen.

Unlimited jd 11-11-2014 09:00 AM

Well I'm not cutting the check lol. But if there's something I can do I'm easy enough to get in touch with. I hear mike Lund is working pretty hard on it, and I'm good friends with the owners of the other waterfront marina and restaraunt.

I'd love to see a local race. I just don't see it happening there. I'd also love to hit the lottery and retire at 35 but I don't bank on it. Not being a downer, just the reality.
Oh ya.......on top of other things mentioned, fall river has 2 small hotels, and only two waterfront business that would truly benefit from this event.

Can you guys list up some needs for the race site? How many ambulances? How much area for dry pits? How much $$$$$ and how far off shore the course has to be ? I'd imagine coast guard isn't going to allow the course to go under the bridge or by the boat ramp? Let's see if I can turn to some optimism. I'll gladly look into these things.

1MOSES1 11-11-2014 11:25 AM

reading this thread really got my hopes up. it would be cool to see some races in our local waters. cant really think of a better spot either. seeing boats whiz by the battleships would be pretty cool. not to mention there is a lot of room on land to watch. i have my fingers crossed.

Shoot Smitty an email, I'm sure he'd be glad to have another local guy just wanting to help out.

It would be cool to have a turn in front of the Battleship. Much like the turn inside the harbor at Key West.
Sell spectator tickets for a spot on the Battleship. I'm sure Mike Lund at Borden Light would be a huge help. If I'm not mistaken, isn't he on the City Council?

The race is being run out of Bordon Light Marina. Mike has already met with Smitty of OPA. Mike is working out the logistics of running the race along with the poker run on the same weekend.

Mike was a councilor but has not run for election recently.

so is blm/tipsy prying open the safe to pay opa to come to town, or just spearheading the fundraising? Justice curious.

If it happens Ernie try not to make it the same weekend as buffalo and 1000 islands poker run. I'll call you tomorrow.

I enjoyed racing there back in the day !

I even made the local newspaper with a story titled "Speed vs Power" with the image below.

It was ironic that it had nothing to do with the race but actually on Photography . :) Speed of the shutter and Power of a Lens ....

SS930 11-20-2014 12:10 PM

If it's run the same weekend as the FRPR, it would be armageddon at BLM! With that said, it would add to an already fun and exciting weekend, one I look forward to every year.

One major downside to this location is the water is far from 'offshore' conditions (it's like running on a river)... then again, that might mean it will fit right in with the majority of other races on the circut. :D

I have run many true OFFSHORE races in my lifetime, but nothing equals the thrill of 10 boats, deck to deck, going into turn one.

Well said Ernie! Opa has great stats as opposed to the cluster poop that happens at a race down south .

F1-00 Racing 11-21-2014 11:47 AM

Does anyone have any confirmed dates as to when this race will happen? I went to the opa site and nothing for 2015(except the awards) is posted. Since I do enjoy racing down south in what is been referred to as a "cluster poop" as well as up north, I am putting my schedule together now... I know things get mentioned in drivers meetings and they sound really great, however until "John Hancock's" are signed on the dotted line with the extensive contracts that are involved in locking up a race site, well ya know....

Wazzup Racing 11-21-2014 11:49 AM

Just stumbled across this. Wow so much positive input. This race will happen, problems with the coast guard in the past, had nothing to do with the race. Political thing in the area that has been solved. I met with Mike and Ernie, in Solomons. All is a go. Lots to do as it is a new site, But it will get done. As far as financial help from the City? Yea like any city opens its check book. Ha ha. Scarab 63 sour grapes. Keep plugin Ernie, we'll be up to see you guys in a few weeks. Don't let a few, who know nothing bother you. Smitty

Yeah, Smitty, Louie The Rigger and I made Mike and Ernie an offer they couldn't refuse! Gonna be a great race site with a bunch of great people. Oh, anyone needing info about OPA Racing and The Jersey Boyz, we have sites with all our phone numbers and e- mails on them. Thanks

No sour grapes here.......I hope it does happen.
I was just recalling the conversion we had about east Tawas Michigan and how opa didn't return on the second year because the town couldn't bolster the funds......remember, opa gave them a discounted rate on the first season as a sign of good faith of future races to come.......you told me that, or did you forget that too ? ;)
Anyways, good luck with the race I'm sure it'll be great.

Mike

Not getting involved in any BS between the 2 of ya, however OPA did race at East Tawas, Michigan for 2 years... It was the 3rd year(2014) that a race was not hosted by them

Jamie, this event is going to need the help of the whole boating group. At boating events, you and the two Mikes are the first to offer help to those in need. When you guys were forming a racing team, and held a fund raiser, we were there to support. We will need your help now. Thanks

Ernie I'm more than willing to help. Tell me what I can do. I posted a few questions here and my concerns that is feel the organizers will have a hard time with. No one answered a question other than it's all set.

wow i hope all this works out, it would be something to remember for sure.

bwd 11-22-2014 04:26 PM

We, from the upper northeast are thrilled to race close to home. We do a fair bit of travelling to get down south and west . And happy to do it btw. We are happy, just to have a place to go most of the time. But to have a race in our back yard is terrific. I have talked to Mike at Borden light Marina at length and he is enthusiastic to say the least. He knows I will do whatever he may need, if anything, in my own small way, to help pull this off as I'm sure Ernie and his crew of veteran racers will do also. My glass is always half full so I'm going on the assumption that, that is where We are racing in August. Good luck to all on putting this together.

TomR 11-22-2014 04:30 PM

Hi Ernie, Karen and I would love to be a part of things! Let us know what we can do.
