I drilled the holes for the steering helm, then when the removable steering wheel adapter came in it needed a bigger hole. I was trying to figure out how to hole saw a bigger hole when there is nothing for the pilot bit. I put some bigger bolts in the holes used to bolt the helm and let them be the hole saw guide. It worked pretty good.

Total rookie question: In case of a large enough hull breach, such that pumps cannot keep up, can the water intake be modified with a mechanism to close and redirect intake from the bilge. Permits the engines to assist the pumps. (Maybe I've watched too many SciFi movies.)

Absolutely it is possible. Many large sport fish and yachts have a similar set up to use the mains as emergency crash pumps. It can even be as easy is closing the through hull and cutting the water intakeline to have it suck water from the bilge.
