Hoping to get to visit the west end of lake Erie soon. I always hear how insanely nasty it is there. Last night i spent a solid hour watching boat videos from lake erie fun runs, poker runs, random weekends of kellys island and PIB bar scenes, and so on. What is puzzling, is i seen tons of small boats running around. Small single engine boats, small cruisers , old small bajas, crownlines, etc running back and forth to the islands having a good time. Around here, its pretty rare that a guy with a 25ft single engine, will travel 15 plus miles away from port every weekend. I tried it once years back with my old 241 Liberator. Once i stuffed the bow at 40mph, nearly blew the windshield out, was soaked head to toe with bilge pump working overtime, I realized that boat had no business on Lake Michigan, at least not near downtown chicago where there is natural waves to deal with, and waves from 50ft cruisers buzzing around.

Doesnt matter what you have, this lake will bust it up. Even a Cigarette.

the biggest prob with our lake is it gets relatively shallow west of the Erie Islands so the waves get very steep and very close together. The other issue is the depth drops off at the islands and east and if the winds are from N/NE it stacks up big time right there between the main land and the islands and can be extremely confused and choppy without direction. I can remember one Fall run i mad in my 34 Scarab into an east headwind, was not to bad from Toledo to the cut through at Marblehead. Took me about fifty minutes to get to that point at 33 miles and the last six miles to The Casin took nearly as long. It was evil . . . really evil. There was no getting on plane and i had a very weird thing happening to me and my boat in that slop. It was steep enough the tip of my boat would nose into a wave every so often and as the boat teetered over the crest the props would come up high enough suck air down as they hooked back into the water and it acted like i blew a coupler. Would free wheel cavitate till i clicked into neutral for a second and let the props stop then back into forward. Weirdest thing ever and i was seriously freaked a bit till i figured out what was going on. Now thats a steep wave lol. I can tell ya one thing I'll take ten footers in deep water any day over threes and fours in the west Erie basin and islands. Its all good though . . . we all have some water we call home . . . this has been mine for forty five years

I believe you. It is a scientific fact that lake erie gets rough. It is also a scientific fact, Lake Michigan, superior, huron, ontario, atlantic and pacific ocean, and gulf of mexico also gets rough. You guys over there arent the only ones who can appreciate the ride of a 47 apache, straight bottom cig, scarab, etc. Just like daves story of this scarab blowing the props loose, been there before on lake michigan. Ran with a buddy with a 40ft cat that stood that thing on its azz end over and over again , while my 40ft formula with 24 deg straight vee blew the cabin closet doors off, broke the air conditioner, put a stress crack on the deck midship that you could have passed a silver dollar through., and sheared the fuel tank access panel screws off . It wasnt a video where the props never leave the water, and the throttle levers get pulled back once every 30 seconds, where i see guys calling it "5ft'ers"

I was able to rig it at PIB to get back thank god... first time ever being towed in with a twin engine boat! Good thing Scott was right there when it happens wind was pushing me into rocks
