Yes, pretty much the same game that car dealers play. The thing with boats is that the list of options is endless. So, it makes it harder to compare even the same make/model of boat.

yeah, I'm having a hard time believing anyone pays a 100k for a 24 foot baja

I started out looking for a powerless 28-36 go-fast CC that I could buy for cash and then buy a set of NEW Mercury Verado 300 or 350's (with new shifter and steering etc) and have a like new boat for $50-60k. Mercury has a decent Repower Finance program that makes buying the new motors reasonable. Basically, your boat payment is the motors & rigging etc.
But, even the CC's I have seen that need power are outrageously priced (to me). For example, there is a 2006 Catera for sale with NO power. It needs several things. But, it'll set you back $35k! |

You find me a 39' NT that is selling anywhere close to that. A 32' Sunny will be my 2nd boat and I hope to get it this year for cruising the ICW here for dinner etc. |

I think the bottom line is mid level manufacturers like Fountain,Donzi and Baja aren't mass producing
Performance boats anymore. Sure they will build you one but who's gonna buy a 35 -40 model of A mid line boat for 300-400k especially from manufactures that's changed hands 3 times in a few years, and a Cig or Nortech will run north off 600k. That's way out of most people's league. I think that will keep The price of good used boats higher from here on out as long as gas is cheap and people are making Decent money. Hell, I paid over 85k for a brand new Avolon pontoon with a 250 Yamaha on it,but boy She's sweeeeettt! Lol. Put 3 hours on the Fountain last year.Must be getting old. |
We're sinking into the black hole, the gaping chasm with a huge void of good used boats.
Not enough new performance boats were built after the GFC to meet the supply demands for good used boats in 2017. Just think how many performance boats were built in say, 2005 compared with 2012. I know we use Baja, Fountain and Donzi a lot in these discussions but they were huge contributors for many years providing boats that would eventually see their way onto the used market and now there's lots around if you want a boat from 10 plus years ago but if you want something built from 2009 to 2015, it ain't out there and never will be. Prices on 10 year old boats get driven up as a result. Sad but true. If you were fortunate enough to have bought something new in the last 8 years, there aren't lots of them around so you could expect good resale value. RR |
I agree with Rak, I see people selling used 35 fountains for what they were selling new after the collapse and the dealers etc sunk.
Shogens advertised price back then for brand new 2007-2009's are the same price people list them for now. Even if they don't get asking it isn't going to be far off for a 8-10 year old boat. |
Biggest unknown for a used I/O buyer today should be "Who am I going to sell it to when I am done with it?" How many desirable boats have sat in the classifieds even when priced great? (Cashbars 37 AT comes to mind). How many nice boats are simply sitting because the buyers pool has shrunk to never seen before levels? LOTO dealers seem to sell everything they get their hands on because that is a buyers mecca yet American Muscle 2 can't seem to find its 5th or 6th owner despite being one of the best 46's out there.
The 41 Apache in the classifieds is for sale for 50% of what the seller says the McManus restoration cost! The other glitch will be insurance/financing on the aging fleet. I have seen posts where insurance is getting tough on older boats so that will squeeze the market as well. Other boats sell within hours or days, some without even being listed so there is certainly a market out there but not like it was 15 years ago. Speaking of new boats.......When was the last Top Gun built? Seen some new 42X's and 50 Marauders but I can't remember the last TG to roll out of Opa Locka. Ditto for Nortech (the last I/O I remember was Mark Fishers 52V w/1350s but that has to be 2+ years ago). Was the last Top Gun the burgundy/gold one built for the Qatar team? |
