I bought my last new boat 12 years ago. It was the second new boat I've owned. The other 2 I bought used. Back when i was shopping and buying new in the late 90's and early '00's, 15 -18% off retail was considered a fair deal. This was on sub-100K boats. Not sure what the margins are today. Clean, used I/O's are still selling no problem in my neck of the woods and at LOTO.

I am not sure what this says about the market, but I've been watching this boat for awhile, mainly daydreaming.....and the price went from $105k last week to $112k this week. lol

I think this might have been Riehl's demo boat that originally had 150's on it and vinyl graphics then was re-rigged. Think they were originally asking in the 120's. I think this boat was also listed in the 120's but I see now there is no price listed. To think not too long ago they were offering this boat for 80K new with McLeod, 496 MAG, K-planes, and basic Mitch-T paint.

I'd say that new 288 is somewhat reasonably priced, at least compared to what I hear a new 292 fastech is going for... (240k+)

Head down to the Chevy dealer and buy a brand new C5 Corvette for double the MSRP that the car was 13 years ago with zero improvements to the design or performance! |
The stepped hulls are the last major breakthrough for v - bottoms, and they are updated and tweaked as models vary. There is a world of difference between transportation (necessity) and recreational products ( selective purchase) when it comes to development, marketing, competition and pricing. There actually have been some valid boating related updates in the last 10 - 15 years. Lighter stronger resins and hull lay-ups, fuel injected engines, Smartcraft technology, better interior layouts and materials, even that new Volvo drive with the props pulling instead of pushing. The fact that Mercury dominates most of the I/O market is also an issue, there really is not much effort from other manufacturers to up the game. Once again, kudos to Volvo. Believe it or not, a lot of the automotive technology like smaller turbo motors, ABS, camera monitoring, autonomous vehicles, huge horsepower gains etc. is a result of CAFE regulations and government meddling. Maybe President Trump should demand accountability from all the boat manufacturers!

Interesting thread.
I've heard the argument that lack of new boats in the market has inflated the prices of used boats. That's fair, I suppose. What if we looked at it from the other side of the equation, the demand side. Right now there are a population of performance boat enthusiasts, but that population is aging. I'm 35, and I have only one friend my age who owns a go-fast boat. My other friends don't have the interest in mechanical things to keep a performance boat going. I foresee a significant drop in demand for these used boats as the enthusiasts age out of the market. I foresee the same thing happening to classic cars. Gen X-ers and Millenials aren't the wrenching types that the Boomers were. |
