Cigarette Marauder 50 or Outerlimits SL50
Hi to all,
Not a newbie to boating by far, but an absolute newbie to high performance boats. Looking to take the plunge on one of these two, slightly used boats. From the ones who know, what would you suggest? Differences etc? Thanks! |
|
I’ll take a few bags of that popcorn....
1 is completely custom, epoxy resin, foam and composite stringers, core, and transom. the other has classic styling, and build techniques. |
OL will be lighter and faster with same power , the Cig will crush wave's better being a heavier boat , Just my thoughts , both great looking boats
|
The winter threads are starting to pick up lately... :food-smiley-007:
|
Both have the appropriate oval on the side so your good to go
|
As you're an "absolute newbie to high performance boats" I'm sure either boat would be awesome.
I hope you've done some homework on the cost of maintenance, specifically engine options. These things like to run but they like to be loved too. Look at both and buy the one you think looks nicest. :) RR |
I’m not usually the one to point this out but...Darr??

Him or not, the dude's left a heck of a legacy here :lolhit: |
neither come in a box of Trix, and if your new to boating, you have no business trying to run a 100+ mph boat the size of a semi trailer, Not to mentions the side splitting laughter of the underwriter when you try to insure it,
Pros and cons if you really must... Fountain skanks have been known to defect when given the opportunity to ride in an outerlimits.... With the Marauder, you can stick your chest out and exclaim "why yes it is !" when some guy at the boat launch asks if thats one of those "cigar boats"...FYI, no matter what engines you get in it, thats guy has an exwife with a cousin that has a cigar boat with a pair of corvette motors and its definitely faster. (he will gladley hook you up with his exwife if you take him for a ride though...) |
Outerlimits for me.

I checked. The OP is not Jim Darr, guaranteed. He's the real deal.
|
:Score-101010:
|
There are two types of boat owners.
1. Those who own a Cigarette. 2. Those who wish they own a Cigarette. That's all that needs to be said! :evilb::party-smiley-048: |
At least he's not looking for a cat......:party-smiley-004:
|
It did not list what location or water type the Op has in mind for its use. North I would take the OL. South as in Florida I would take the Cig.
Chris |
Cig, not a comparison in my opinion.
|
OL .... not a comparison in my eyes
|
100% chance OP does not post again.
|
Outerlimits 100%.
|
Rough water ride 50 Cigarette. Top speed 50 Outerlimits. Being new to performance boats I would think the Cig would be more forgiving to driver comparing to OL. Both top of the food chain in performance boat world IMO. With 50' of running surface I would lean to OL.
|
Buy something smaller, you'll tire of all the parasite friends after one season.
|
Build quality is nice on both brands, I personally would op for a Outerlimits
|
wow, I sure wish I had the means to step right into a 50' Cig/OL as my 1st performance boat!!! With the horsepower that goes with those 2 boats, I wouldn't want to ride with an inexperienced captain!

Not the same at all or even close. Travis has a proven track record of motor sports of all kinds of over the years but even remove al that he is sitting next to one of the best in the biz teaching and showing him what to do in a race boat that has a team to do all the rest. Anyone new to boating wanting a 50's monster with big power that they will have to transport, maneuver, and drive on their own is either insane or just fishing sites for stupid comments. |

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...c3d380f37.jpeg Outerlimits doesn’t make a 50+ foot boat so this is not really a fair comparison. Both are beasts for sure but not when you take away the bussel which is what? 4 feet? 5 feet? Maybe someone has those dimensions. This is such a blatantly Winter thread it’s silly. |

I didn’t put down too many details as I thought that people would develop rather than assume some BS.
For now it’s the OL and maybe at some point time a Cigarette might join. for those responding with silly (for not using another word) comments: 1. I said I was a Newbie to performance boats, not a Newbie to racing or other high performance activities 2. I said I either owned or have owned boats, so not quite the idiot of the village that doesn’t know how or what he is doing, other than asking for some smart advice if available 3. At least in private, one of the moderators was class enough to provide some quite good points and thanks for this. Thanks for those that helped, as far as as the others go, thanks for at least keeping the thread a bit current ;-) |
Well, welcome to OSO and good luck in your search
|
I can vouch for serialcollector. Hopefully he spends some more time here on the site. We'll have to see what else he collects in this new realm.

You have to understand when someone comes outta the blue saying they’re new to the hobby but want to spend 700k++ out of the gate it’s going to get quite a few scoffs. Plenty of this in the past.
If it were me, I’d be contacting the manufacturers and ask if they can get you in touch with some owners of said models, if you haven’t already. Don’t think there’s many owners of these models frequenting this forum. |
The best advice I give when buying something like this.
1. Buy the one in the best condition. 2. Try to look at as many comparable units as you can. 3. Drive as many as you can |
4. Tres Martin

The lines and proportions of the late marauders are just perfect. They revised them to get this right.
The SLs deck length and height, and bustled rear are all wrong in comparison. I like the SV a lot better. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...286b73b8a.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...8c375204a.jpeg |
