As was said above fuel is the cheapest part, even at $4/gallon. #6 drives are the cat's meow, but IF you were to blow one up you're out a boat load of money. My boat probably deserves 6's based on the size but in a weird way I'm more comfortable with XR's. At least if I obliterate one I'm out a few thousand dollars and back up and running the same weekend.
Than seems fast for a bravo repair!!
The confidence of having a good drive and not have to worry about drive issues or lost weekend is kinda priceless

If I remember correctly my stock 425hp 8.1/496 burns 42gph at wot. It is tuned rich by merc when it leaves the factory.

I've had 3 different performance V bottom boats and all averaged about 1 MPG
