You need a Velocity 280. Fantastic running boat. I don't know this boat or owner, but I googled the phone number and the owner is 72 years old
and lives in Wisconsin, but runs this boat in Lake Havasu. Low hours and probably has been maintained with an open checkbook.

After talking to the Man this boat is amazing, its about as perfect as they come for a 20 year old boat. And this engine is easy to upgrade to get more hp out of. Should be a 85-90 mph boat no problem with a few tweaks

I live in West Michigan, I'm very familiar with Powerquests. I can't swing a dead cat without hitting one. I don't dislike them.
Velocity's were built as a top performance boat. The whole hull was designed with one thing in mind... speed and performance. And they have the awards and hardware to back it up.
Under 30' I believe a pad outperforms steps. My friends 27' NA straight bottom padded Fountain would outperform 27' step bottom Fountain with similar power.

Some on here will tell you to stay away from the 575SCI, but i really like them. They are old school and will easily make 700+hp reliably. In stock form they have a flat tappet cam and iron heads, they are also prone to head gasket failures with the original gaskets. A good set of heads, a roller cam. Cometic gaskets and a tune will get you there. There are smaller blower pullies available to increase boost. Eddie Young has an injector plate mod that uses standard injectors instead if the TBI injectors and you can have the blower teflon stripped by DMPE for another pound or so of boost. Mine made 760hp after the mods.

Most issues with a blown engine is poor fuel quality. I would never run anything but 92 in the engine and i guarantee people have ran 87 in them. Engine load, fuel octane prop pitch all effect cylinder pressure and load. I would prop it to spin on the upper end of the rpm range to get some load off engine.

I had an 02 280 Velocity. I LOVED IT!!!
That is a lot of engine engine for that boat. Just work up on the speed slowly. Get used to driving a pad boat. Try to find someone that can show you have to drive it so you don't get into trouble.
Couple of things I loved about my Velocity; deep cockpit, decent cabin for size, very safe to drive at reasonable speeds. I tired to spin it out and no matter what I did, I couldn't.

I think the newer 575 sci engines had hydro rollers from what i found. This boat came with a 500 engine and he had velocity install a new 575 about 6 years ago i guess. The xr drive was making some noise so instead of fixing it he just went ahead and bought a complete new unit top to bottom. Only a few hrs on drive. This will be all the boat i will ever need and then some.

After speaking to the man with this 280 I just bought he is friends with Steve step and they have a long running relationship with velocity boats. When he had the engine swap steve step went over the entire boat for him to make sure everything was perfect. I'm very new to the boat world and that didn't mean anything to me but he said trust me that is a cool thing. I can't wait to get this boat and see it in person. The boat has only been in fresh water since day one.
