:Nothing stopping anyone from doing their on fun runs. You got friends: plot a course, pick a date, gather up a few boats, and go have a blast. The logistics of these massive runs makes them expensive to put together. And lets not forget Boyne support charities. Is it not the organizers responsibility to raise as much money for charity as possible?
Or just pay the entry fee, run the run, and hang out at the "party cove" afterwards until time to pull out and crash at the hotel room. We have a great time at the Cumberland PokerRun, and we certainly aren't a "BigDick". We just don't have to be ON the dock, with our boat, for the party. Hell, I think I'd rather be anchored up in a quiet cove for the night than listen to hiphop til whatever hour of the morning.
Thanks. Brad.

I was speaking specifically to the cost aspect. I got nothin’ for beating the rush. It is what it is, I guess.

But, for the record, to date, we have not actually participated in the Cumberland PokerRun ourselves. We’ve talked about it several times, but never signed up. We just hang out all weekend, enjoying the vibe. Some friends have the last three years, though, doing pretty much exactly as I described above, but I’m not sure they have any better time than we do. They seem to enjoy it though.
Thanks. Brad.

Just a follow up on what I said and what else has been said.... yes it certainly is the job of the organizers to raise as much money as possible for their charities but I said when we were doing this run that while offering the main dock to sponsors, some paying insane money, could kill the run as we knew it. Has it killed it overall? I think it selling out in two minutes answers that.

Here is my take on it from a broke a$$ boater that has participated. The 1st year we went, we were suppose to take my 1977 Scarab 300. We seized a motor the day before on the fun run. The same day we drove back home and picked up my dad's Formula 242 to run in the poker run. Because my entry was placed 32 seconds after opening, we received a slip in the main marina probably because we had a smaller (24') boat. When we were idling out into Lake Michigan, we heard people cheering us on "you go red boat" More people could relate to us because we took out underpowered cheap junk and played with the big boys. Last year when we took my buddies 38' Formula F2 boat out there (again probably the cheapest boat out there but it runs 104) I had the anouncers give special recognition to my dad who was turning 90 and went on the whole run with us. I will admit that it seems like if you have the bucks to throw around for a sponshopship with a slip assignment ( $3500) that does help the charity, but it also lock s out a lot of other guys with cheap junk (like me) that would just want to get recognized. Its the usual story. He has has the most bucks wins.
