I was in the bilge when a hot wire touched a neutral and the wire got RED HOT ,looked like an LED strip.... burned thru the hydraulic line for the hatch so as I`m trying to put this out there`s trans fluid squrting out of the line as the hatch was closing on me.
That was not a good day, lucky for me Erica was there to help me otherwise I don`t know what would have happened as there was a ton of smoke in the bigle as it`s closing me in. I had a hard time breathing
That was the first week I had the cig , I should have taken the hint that this boat would try to F me every chance it got.

And you didn’t NOT name it Christine after that? I mean, it was even the right colors.

I had something similar happen to me at LOTO...we were running about 30mph just cruising along when all of a sudden my buddy starts yelling were on fire....i look back and white smoke is billowing out of all the vents and coming up from under and around the back seat. Kill the throttles and it was oddly like a coordinated dance that we had never rehearsed...we both grab an extinguisher...i lift the hatch (the hatch motor was dead and unhooked at the time) and he is ready to hit any flames that are going...yet when i lift the hatch open and look, there's nothing there!...all the smoke clears out and i then can see the harness is fried on port motor. Looking closer i see where it rubbed behind the alternator against a bracket on the exhaust. I cut the wires back as far as i can and tape up the rest and jumped the motor to start with a pair of vice grips at the starter relay so our weekend wouldn't be a total loss. Funny how fast the magic smoke will leave an electrical item when you give it too much current!

I had something very similar happen. Fired my boat up to take it from the slip over to the launch ramp to pull it out. After warming the engines and a few mins of idling all of a sudden my stbd engine shut off, took a few seconds to get it refired, port engine started sounding like it was loading up/running rough, a few feet from the ramp smoke was billowing out the vents, smelled like a$$ and hot electrical, I killed the engines throw open the hatches and killed the batteries.
Got it home to find out stbd side starter stayed engaged, must have back fed electrical system. After digging into it more/replacing starter/starter wiring etc/ nuked the coil, I found my ignition switch wasn’t springing back to “run” the run position after cranking the engines over

Was running back to marathon at night after boating all day in key west.... center console has a wash down shower head under the center console (it's a metal covered hose like a old house shower) that thing bounced up and laid between all my batteries and touched + , - ..... it looked like a light bulb filament when I looked in there to find out wtf was going on (burning smell ect)
Other than that hose nothing damaged but could have been a disaster for sure. Rigged up a little bucket with a lid and secured it as a container for the hose to coil into....
Weird things always seem to happen to me.

I'm curious if the wire that connects the alternator output to the big hot wire at the starter solenoid had a fuse/breaker. I believe mine has a 100A fuse there in case the alternator shorts internally or that same wire gets pinched/melted and grounds out.
