I am pretty excited for the future. My 42' running surface is being straightened and modified "done by Jan. 1st I am told". The future power of outboards is going to break some hearts. There are two outboard cats running in the 160 range right now and there will be many to follow. We ran a 139 pass at the shootout this year (motec) and when we downloaded the data, it was there for the last twelve seconds of the run. We had a nitrous malfunction (bottle had bled off-we had no N2O on our pass), I didn't realize it until we had already raised the limiter and added a bigger shot for a 2nd pass. We changed the bottle and sent it out but the rods didn't agree with our aggressive ramp in. The boat was set up to make a 155 pass. I am headed to VA. with a few powerheads tomorrow-hopefully we won't have to deal with the same result again next year.
Justin's 39' has seen 153 and ran 147 on just MoTec in the shootout. This stuff is very real....I truly hope people respect the power that they will have on tap in these light weight boats. Joe You are in good hands in VA. |

Definitely something people need to be careful with. I'm not going to be trying to keep up with you guys. I don't think I want to go over 150. We did 110 octane and 18.5psi and the acceleration was insane. I'm glad conditions weren't smooth enough to try for a big number because I wasn't holding onto the steering wheel and I hated that.

My impressions on a 37 XPR Amp.
In 2' water it danced around a lot more than my 3600 would and got flighty crossing wakes where mine wouldn`t even know it was there. However coming into Key West with a ton of boat traffic washing machine water I thought it handled it very well.Cockpit is huge. 2025 and it had a few stress cracks already . Mines 20 years old,has absolutely none. My buddy dead set on getting a OB cat after breaking 2 engines this summer right after they were rebuilt. He went on a demo in a C4100 and hated the ride. He is coming from a 52' OL but used to have a 3100 offshore. He said we would get our asses kicked on Lake Michigan. I don`t know, that doesnt seem right. My cig was up for sale after Brett took us out for a day in the P360. Love those things and the new P420 is amazing. I`d love to get a OB cat but the pricing is crazy. Triple the insurance Can`t sleep on them Dependant Mercury for parts Worse ride A huge one in the PLUS column however is reliability/gas usage and really I`m tired of spending my time in the bilge. Id love to not have a bilge. It`s always something with a BBC. I can justify the cost since future spending (BBC rebuilds) would end up costing more in the long run but I still can`t see myself spending $400k on a 2018 and older boat. I`ll be a bilge monkey forever I guess, I sure am tired of wrenching all the time and breakdowns. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...6395b542d0.jpg Florida boating is interesting. We were dodging crab pots like Frogger, guess no night rides are possible? Can`t see those at night. Tides and keeping track of channel markers.. eh |
Good review of the differences, I was wondering how Ron's Amp would be. Everyone always likes to say how great their boat is in the rough down here but when it comes to it, when it's rough, they stay on the inside.
Florida boating, yes crab pots and channel markers, Then when docking, tides and wind with most docks piling style can make docking a whole new task. I love how in the Midwest everyone knows where to put fenders before you get to a dock, here,,,,, nope. On the staying out of the bilge, 500HP BBC's are pretty reliable, LOL.

These bigger OB Cats take the big water very differently. If that is your gauge, go ride in an M42R, P420, 440x MTI...check the Valor also its half the price. They eat it up and they are still pretty fast.
I'm a V guy. I like big blocks and a swim deck. Took me a long time to get onboard with this. I'm running poker runs literally 100% throttle 100% of the time. Then I'm hitting every gas station along the way. These guys were cruising at 110 having conversations with their passengers and starting the run with half a tank of fuel, and running engines 800 hours. I'm sure I'll take my V on some run at some point, or maybe just putter around here. |
For all you guys that keep trying to compare the performance of outboard vs inboard cats, please look at the lap times from Key West this past weekend. Educate yourself on the reality of the factual difference in performance in real world conditions. Super Cat is 38' cats w/ 800hp single carb motors and Factory Stock is 38'/39' cats w/ 500hp supercharged motors and on average the Super Cat boats are 15 seconds a lap quicker on a short 4.4-mile course. There is no comparing outboards to inboards when it comes to performance, especially considering that almost every inboard cat at a poker run nowadays has 1100s or 1350s in it. You can put all the Motec and Kong Performance kits you want on your outboards, they're never going to compare to the 1100/1350/1550 and beyond inboard cats when it comes to getting from point A to point B the quickest. I was in KW all week and watched every race, Super Cat ran consistently around 10mph faster average-speed laps than Factory Stock - even though Factory Stock has the highest HP outboard motors available while Super Cat has about the lowest HP motors you'll find in an inboard boat nowadays. The outboard cats are great (though way overpriced imo) as boats that you want to run every weekend but quit thinking they're nipping on the heels of the inboard cats, because they just aren't.
And just for the record, I'm not an outboard hater, I have a triple 300X, 32 Skater down at my dock and I also looked forward to the Super Stock race the most every race day, as they put on the best show of any class on the water! 2025 Results - Race World Offshore |
The other thing is this Reggie Fountain measuring tape BS.
A 40 MTI has a 36' running surface, a 37 XPR has a 34' running surface, a 36 DW is pretty much a 36' boat . Things to consider. Skater30 , whats the weight differences between Supercat and Factory stock any idea? |

What about Randy Kent's new line of Platinum Powerboats? Everything Randy builds/commissions/whatever has an attention to detail level that rivals perfection. The boats he had in Key West looked awesome, but I didn't crawl around. I know a couple people with Renegades and they all say they are built rock solid.
