Girl that Drive Boats?
Just a question, How many of you let your wife/significant other captain the boat? What about docking? Linda drives now and then but mostly just OBC(offshore beverage consultant).
We were out Sunday evening for a cruise and saw 6 girls on a go fast I could imaging telling my wife hey honey take your friend out on the boat tonight, she has never docked before. Not to be sexist but have any of you guys teach your ladies how to handle the boat? |
Wife drives all the time, I throttle. I'll usually flip up the seat of the bolster so most people think she is doing it all. Great ego killer to those that want to race her :)
She hasn't docked the Velocity yet, but has no trouble with the Whaler, docking, on-off the lift, hitting the marina for fuel. |
Re: Girl that Drive Boats?
Originally posted by HebertNecessity OBC(offshore beverage consultant). i let my girl drive a couple times. the last time she got nervous when approaching a slow moving cruiser from behind that was throwing a normal size wake. we were going around 45 - 50, and i noticed she wasn't attempting to go left of right around the boat. we were about 30 foot from the back of the cruiser before i jumped across the cockpit and pulled back on the throttle. When i asked her why she didn't do anything...she said cause she didn't know what to do cause she was afraid of the wake. So i said..."so you thought you would just run them over? :hothead: " Needless to say she hasn't driven since. :( |
I can drive the boat and dock it (unless it is really windy). Had no problems with the 41 and 42 Sonic and look forward to driving the 43 Black Thunder. Bill has been great when it comes to "tuning" my skills. Love the looks when guys see a female driving a "big nose, go-fast."

My girl drove my 40' formula . I haven't talked her into the 39' express cat yet !
Where is Becca ? She could teach the girls how to drive !!:D  |

why don't you have her start like this? practice makes perfet. that is how i learned. Teach her how to read the water and know the wind. and let her do it again and again. correcting your own mistakes is the best way to learn. Driving a small boat or a big boat it is all thesame principal. and have PATIENCE with her..

This girl owns and drives her own boat. Docking is still a little shaky (it's a single that doesn't back up well) but the rest of it is OK. I've never had a guy around teaching me either. Most of it (especially with the Fountain) I've learned on my own.

Ive tried to get my girlfriend to drive but she hasnt bitten yet. This year Ill insist. My younger sister said after driving for just a few minutes she felt 10 times more comfortable because she could feel the motor and why the boat was moving the way it was.
I think its pretty important that the other people on the boat could atleast move it. If something were to go wrong the chances are your wife/girlfriend is going to be there. |
Not yet, but ATTEMPTING to to teach the girlfriend to drive and dock this summer on early mornings to start with.
1) I think it will be cool if she could do it, and 2) Nobody else knows how to drive my boat and since she is he one on the boat the most, she gets to learn in case of an emergency :( Then she gets to learn how to drive the truck pulling the boat :) Will be a VERY interesting season ;) |

Debbie drives some everytime out. Last weekend, she drove 34 miles on the way back.
|
She touches nothing but dock lines, fenders, and the ice chest.....;)
|
Good grief people, it really is not that complicated. To go to our local hangout when I leave the dock it's 12 miles and I come back in the dark. Gotta laugh though, we used to have a 24 Skater and I took the girls out on that one day and we passed a Russian ship in the channel (keep in mind that our graphics were streaming stars and stripes) and all of the crew of that freighter were on deck giving me the speed up signal. My girlfriends were going "slow down" it was only about 90. Besides that I took the girls out in our top gun and pulled into the local bar and all guys couldn't believe it. I docked one of our Apache's and this guy was on the public dock telling his wife that the guy next to me (Danny of course) must have separate controls on the other side of the boat. What kind of a world do we live in?

P.S., you egged me on Boot
|
Of course we can not forget our Long term Board Goddess herself Blonie :D:D She can tow, launch, and drive her Cig. The best part. I hear she can grease her own shafts!!!! :D:D I have been on her boat twice and I feel more comfortable with her driving then most guys that I know.
Hey BCC hope that was ok :D:D Jon |
Mine drives at the local lake all the time,
even will put it on the trailer, had docked it, but not her favorite thing, she actually knows what drive trim and tabs do:D :D Usually, around 4 pm saturday afternoon, about a half a dozen of the gals will jump in their ride of choice and go for a TOPLESS lake cruise. Sorry, no photos available ;) |

muscle girls and muscle boats.

My wife got a crash course in our little boat last summer. I docked it, jumped out to tie off, and the boat backed out again with the throttle in neutral! I had to let go or go swimming. She had never driven, but she did very well with shouted directions, even took a quick ride and docked it. She's nervous about driving the Sonic, but I want to teach her this summer. Its just safer to have more than 1 capable driver.
And she drives the dually towing the boat like a champ! |
My wife is not that interested in driving. I was just saying to her earlier this evening that she needs to learn how to drive.
|
Awe.......gee Audio, stop it some more ;)
I remember those times well, we had a blast! |
I have tried to get my wife to drive, but she says she gets too nervous. She is just interested in riding, so I have to drive all of the time.
|
my wife likes driving the boat, docking ..............not yet!!! She does well. I like to sit back and watch the faces as we blow past!!!
She always drives when me and the Captain (Morgan), have a meeting of the minds and he wins!!! Raced a Velocity back from lunch one day she definitely held her own!!! |
We have been doing that for 20 years.
It started with our first boat. Michelle learned to launch and drive the boat when we skied. As we got bigger boats she always launched and docked. The largest was a 34 foot Scarab. Some of the guys tell me she actually handles the boat better then me. :p :p :p |
My wife has always launched, loaded and docked the boat. She loves to volunteer to take her friends for beverage runs. I hate it when they come back with a bunch of beads. :D She is real comfortable up to 70 - 75 and hit 90 once last year. She will get some more high speed practice this year and I think she will see the century mark.

I'm another woman boat owner......
I drive and dock the boat. However.......I did purchase a different boat with twin motors at the end of lake season this last summer. SO I still need a couple lessons from Gordo before I take off with just my girlfriends in this boat. |
i got dre' into runing our poker run AT boat last year...and started her racing the 1 design series in the GLSCS. she's looking forward to driving the f2-21 boat this year on some test runs. i hope we have time for a few poker runs this year!!!

My girlfriend never set foot on a boat before we started dating... I started her off just with driving out in the open waters just to get the feel of the boat. Next, I had her work with the boat by nosing it up to a bouy, bow first and then to the sides, that was out in the open water area, just so she could get the feel of the throttle and how the boat responds. This led to her being able to drop me off at the dock and pick me up.. Then she was able to put the boat on and off the trailer without any problem. One thing at a time seemed to be the key so to build confidence. It makes life so much easier having a second hand. I know some woman that have been boating for years, but are scared straight to get behind the wheel.... for some, it's just not instinctive..... Again, it just makes it so much easier having another helping hand....... Good Luck!!!!
|
I drive, put the boat on the lift, and can make putting the boat on a trailer look like a piece of cake. Love it when all eyes are on me - a woman in a big noisy performance boat easing it up on the trailer. My husband, who backs the trailer down the ramp and waits for me to drive on, just grins.
|
LOL...no she doesn't...right after the st.clair race as you may know, her dad drown to death in lake huron...so she had some things to over come again this past december when i pussed her to get her scuba cirt...this year she sketed on ice climbing...
|
Never been on a boat before i met Kyle 14 yrs ago. His rule, you either back the trailer in the water or drive the boat on and off the trailer or see ya! I chose the boat. I drive it and dock it as well. It is a 31 AO and not a big as some of the others, but I enjoy seeing the guys look at us and laughing like we don't know what we are doing :D Sometimes I still have problems every now and then, but I love the thrill of handling the power;)
CatGirl |
Carol drove and handled the Sea Ray very well. We haven't been out on the new boat, yet! She will do well with the 32' as well, I'm sure. I gave her the choice of backing the trailer or driving the boat. She chose to drive the boat on and off the trailer. Several of the guys wives around here drive their boats on and off, so she will have plenty of help mastering the task.

Marilyn drives, docks and retrieves the boat. Flies it on occasion too!!!
|
I think there are more women on the board that haven't posted yet. I have no problems with mine. I trailered my first one, 23 Nova, put it in and out, docked and really enjoyed it. This one 28 Sonic is on a lift now but will be on a trailer soon. I think all women that boat should know how to do all things involved with boating even if they choose not to do it.
|
Wife won't touch anything. Acts like it is all covered with boiling acid. Only thing she will do is will ride a Jetski, but needs me to untie it for her and to be there when she comes back in to help her get it to the dock/boat.
Kids are much easier to teach than wives. I don't get it. |
My wife has her own boat!!! why should she drive mine?
|
My friend's girlfriend has her own 31 Scarab with some warmed over 502's , the boat runs 80 . She docks it on her own with no problems.
The dealer that I bought my boat from used to have 38 Larry Smith Scarab with 1000's and crashboxes and we used to see his then girlfriend and her friends out in the boat all the time. I've tried to get mine to run the boat but she's afraid about breaking something. |
