I pull a 2000 42 Sonic 16.500# or so with a 2000 F350 dually cc psd, and it pull's and stop's great. unless you are going to take the brake's off the trailer or tow 80,000 miles a year traveling the race circut, I don't see the need for a big tractor. The most I think you would ever need is a mid size tractor like a top kick or something that size. You can however pick up a tractor like Lucy's used cheap. That style came out when they had a total length law so they made the truck short so the trailer could be long. The down side you sit on top of the front tire, it's not the best ride. Up to a 50 foot boat at 20k lbs I would stick with a F450-550 for a reasonable amount of towing if it's 3 mile's to the ramp get a 350 they drive nicer for every day use. Now if your going to buy used don't buy some old crap with drum brakes all the new stuff has big 4 wheel disc and stop great. My dad has a trucking company with about 30 tractors I could use anytime I want and I still perfer the F350, the big stuff is just to much for most cases.

Lucy is right,, stopping is the big issue about anything will move it
just be sure it will stop and has a tough frame ,,,,,Dura-max and Ford 1st choices ,,,Dodge way back due to frames (how many dodge 1tons do you see as wreckers,,why not ????)) Just demo before you buy if you can !! :D :D :D |
guillermof: You have a PM.

I tow that with a 3500 Chevy with the old 6.5 turbo diesel. You slow down on big hills but it pulls and stops good. I have done several trips around the midwest. If you are pulling across the country on a regular basis I would consider one of the newer trucks with the stronger engines.
