FYI A Cummins 5.9 weighs 1036 lbs. (470kgs.) dry.

*A Duramax 6.6 is 60 lbs less.

Lets just wait what the weight of the new Cummins 6.7 will be.

Or Duramax 7.8 Inline six.

And short lived for a diesel.

I agree with you on this.

Question: Did you use the 6LY3-ETP (480HP) motors in your new boat, and did you modify them at all? Was not sure if/how well they could be tweaked in a marine application vs. what you can do in a truck.

No they are stock, 480hp, and a program is being tested "finally" and hopefully will be out soon. The difference between the 440 which is mechanical vs the 480 which is electronic. The 440 is about 350 pounds less and can be easily turned up to 500-525without sacrificing anything, and is also cheaper. My 07 4300 boat got sold Friday and Nortech did everything they could to get more speed out of it. They are now doing a glorified vacuum bag set up which will reduce weight and will yeild some more speed. 74 and some change is what we got for a 14000+ pound boat. The goal was 80mph. The great thing about these diesels are at 61 mph I yeild over 2.6 mpg which is awesome for cruising and at 67 mph I am just under 2mpg. Reliability, getting out the hole, midrange is all great, the only problem is top speed. Im contemplating which way to go diesel or gas this time. Jeff

Sold! Congratulations ---I think.
I didn't realize the differences between the 2 engines. Thanks.
For a boat of that weight and speed, those are damn impressive numbers in my opinion with that mpg/range.
Last question -who is creating/testing this tuner program for the Yanmar's?

Except engine life, of course. I hope people don't really think you can overfuel/over boost a diesel engine with no consequences.

Adib mastry is who I am working with. He has also gotten with Livorsi so now the throttles work with the Yanmars or other diesels vs the kind that are presently on the boat. I just did not care for them.

My life long dream is to build marine engines both gas and diesel. As we speak I have a 3000sq Garage (full of my Muscle Car projects...) with a Rolling Road Dyno plus in the works a eddy current Engine dyno that can handle over 2500fl.lbs..the most any diesel Big Rig in the market can put out (Volvo FH16 at 660 hp(DIN) and 2300ft.lbs.)
And Big diesels are quite common for me as I drive Big Rigs right now.
The only "problem" is the drives and gearboxes but I see it this way.
A SCS Crashbox/some multispeed gearbox + Surfacce Drives.

I watch this thread with great interest.
