Memorial Day 2005 on the St. Johns River, Fl.

Where is there a decent place to stay on the river, south of Lake George? Looking for a place for 5/28-30/05, with a slip.
Thanks,
Dean

Astor would be the city, just maybe three miles south of Lake George. The only motel with docks I know of is Blair's Jungle Den, but we were up there during bike week, and the docks were still wiped out from the hurricanes, and the restaurant bar was closed. I think the motel is still open. I've never stayed there, but I heard it's rather "rustic", in other words, like no remote control etc. I myself wouldn't have a problem, because if I were staying there, I'd either be in my boat, or in the bar getting drunk and most likely wouldn't even remember being in the room. :D :drink:

If you don't mind being farther south, at Hontoon Island, there are motels and such on the water. It's about 20 miles south of Astor. The state also has cabins they maintain at Hontoon Island State Park, and they have slips. You can overnight at the slips if you want.

I don't think there is an idle zone from the Hwy 44 bridge in Deland until you reach Astor. It is a 30mph zone though, but my neighbor has lived here his entire life and said he's never been pulled over between here and Astor.

Lol...not sure if that's good or bad... :evilb:

I gotta sort out some carb buggers and redo the stereo(vette needed it).She wouldn't idle last time out(many many months ago).Ran fine but NO idle in neutral or in-gear.Not sure if it's a linkage issue or a pilot jet/low speed jet deal..leaning towards the later. The no idle syndrom reared it's head during a VERY low fuel start. As in boat on trailer and on a hill sideways.I just forgto how low the fuel was and she never fired.Put a half tank in and she fired up and since that moment no-idle. :(

Where ya at now?...you were in clearwater right?

Re: Memorial Day 2005 on the St. Johns River, Fl.

Hontoon is down river of Astor right?....if so then nope.I put in at Astor and go to the Lake.My buddy has gone the other direction a couple times..I'll have to ask him. That Blair's place is "rustic" but in a good way...It's a loud place for sure if the weather is good and the weekend is right.I personally have never stopped there(cop spot) but have slinked by many a night.

All's good here.....just about time to go see what has all gone wrong with the boat since last year... :drink: The cane's ripped off the center part of the windshield(walk-thru) but that's no biggie.

If memory serves , there are 2 idle zones south of Astor. one in Deland (44) and one coming up to hontoon area.
It has been a while since I have been south of Deland (44)on the river . It is approx 30 miles from Hontoon to Astor. It;s a nice cruise with a limit of 30 or SO. North of the lake is Palatka , There are a couple places to stay up there also , it is no speed limit from there to Lake George(silver glenn) and approx 35 miles.

That's all I know about that.

There is a Holiday Inn in Palatka that is right on the river and has boat slips. It's supposed to be pretty decent, and it's not far up from Lake George. The fine for Speeding on the river (non idle speed or slow speed zone) is only $25, so it's not a big deal if you do get caught. They don't seem to enforce it very much.

From rt 44 there is one no wake zone before astor, then astor is one, then there are 2 more before entering the lake itself. There IS a speed limit on the river.. on most non holiday weekends you can get away with ignoring it.. but on holiday weekends the local popo is EVERYWHERE... I have stayed at blairs a few times, and it isnt that bad. Across the river is blackwater, and my brother has stayed there and said its also not that bad. I have not been on the river in a long time, almost 2 years.. the boat is just sitting here collecting dirt.. and its bugging me big time.. Know anyone looking for a nice powerquest? I might as well sell it so someone can enjoy it.

It's not a Holiday Inn anymore. It changed hands. I'll find out the new name. The docks were wiped out when we were there in November.

It's now the Riverfront Inn. It was ok when we were there, but it wasn't anything special. I'd say it's not held to Holiday Inn standards anymore.

So that's a "NO" recommendation as far as staying there? Do they have any docks?

Read the post in the events/gathering section from raceboat rus, thats where he hosts his stuff and he should have the name/phone# posted because he has an event coming up.
No wake zones/manatee zones, after you leave Hontoon going north, the first one starts about 1/4 mile before the hiway 44 bridge, next one is about 1/2 mile or so long when you are coming into Astor(hiway 40 bridge) 3rd one is in front of Jungle Den, 4th is at the half moon fish camp and the 5th one is before you reach the Jetties going into Lk. George.

Hope it helps, Nick

If your going to try to get into Silver Glen on a holiday weekend, the best advice I can give you is be there early(like be at the glen by about 8:30 in the am or so, or you'll be anchoring out in Lk. George.) That is party central for the freshwater boating crowd in this area.

is it possible just to idle into the Silver Glen later in the morning/afternoon, or is it just packed by then, and there is no way in and out after 8-9am?
