Default Oil Analysis, HP525's Mercruiser 25w40

Got the Blackstone report back on this oil. Very impressive!

Mercury Racing HP525 2005 Sonic 42SS

Oil Mercruiser 25w40
Oil added none
Hours on oil 21
Hours on unit 84 approx
Date 8/25/05

Aluminum 6 5 (Universal average is second number)
Chromium 2 2
Iron 10 63
Copper 71 19 (lingering wear-in of bronze parts)
Lead 2 7
Tin 0 9
Moly 4 17
Nickel 0 1
Manganese 0 3
Silver 0 0
Titanium 0 0
Potassium 122 12 (possible antifreeze issue)
Boron 104 81
Silicon 26 115
Sodium 7 14
Calcium 564 519
Magnesium 1249 1195
Phosphorous 1243 1033
Zinc 1457 1280

Barium 0 0

SUS Vis@210C 70.9 70-85 (Sheared to high 40, not bad)
Flashpoint F 370 420
Fuel 2.5% <2%
Antifreeze POS
Water 0 0
Insolubles 0.3 <1.2
TBN 8.3 Plenty of active additive left, could've continued to run this oil according to Blackstone.

I'm pretty impressed with this oil. The additive pack is VERY strong (after 21 hrs), much stronger than the Kendall I've been using and stronger than virgin M1-EP. And didn't even shear out of grade. It's the strongest dino oil I've seen, that's for sure. I guess those guys at Mercruiser know what they are doing?

Blackstone told me my copper was high also, due to lingering wearin AT 200 HOURS. I guess they know what they are doing?

Aluminum wasn't high... it was 6. Bill is calling Merc Racing on the antifreeze issue.

Don't be confused, I was showing the UOA for the oil's performance.

BTW: I though lead was bearings, not copper...

Actually brgs are tin and aluminum over a copper backing. Also bronze brgs have high copper content. Might have slight head gasket or intake seepage to account for the potassium reading.

Thanks Ted! I didn't know that. The guy at Blackstone didn't have an issue with the copper or aluminum levels. Tin was 0. He did have issue with the potassium and the fuel dilution. Has anyone else done a UOA on a 525? Do these engine typically run rich, and could that be a factor in the fuel dilution?

The oil held up well, though...

Our local Academy sells it for $2.33 per quart. I noticed Walmart is carrying it too. About the same price I think.

BTW: The engines are under warranty, and the owner has already forwarded the UOA's to Mercury Racing. I told him to just pull one of those crappy engines, and put it in my barn. It'd look real nice under my hatch!!

Jim did you say put one of my engines in that crappy barn? Just kidding. We are going to do a leak down test along with a cooling system pressure test. Also Merc said to check fuel pressure.

there has been head issues with that engine....both gasket and bolt issues...

fuel issue is from the rings not seating. 2% is not that much for a lot of of WOT and the age of the oil.
