Looking for some advice on how much cam overlap I can run with lightning thru hall ex. water jacketed.
And what is a good Dampner to run on a 540 bbc internal bal?
Which heads AFR 305s or 325s should I run on a 540, 9.5 to 1, single plane intake, 1050 carb, 2800 to 6000 rpm range 3700 cruise?

Re: cam
honda, There has been a TON of talk on this subject. Do a search and you'll have a lot of good reading. Also, "rmbuilder"/Bob Madera would be at least one good person to get ahold of concerning your head/cam, set-up/combination. He engineered my project, and did so for many others. He's also a man of integrity. Send him a PM if you're interested.

Re: cam
It's in a 18ft jet tunnel hull.
I would like to make as much as I can, but reliablity is high on the list and I think the ex. is going to hold me back.
Does any one know if a 10qt stock rail oil pan will work with this set up?
I just sent rmbuiler an email.
I have read so much my head is spinning

Re: cam
I'm still waiting to hear back from Bob.
I have picked up a lot of good info on this site so far and hope to get more.
Does anyone know of any good sites to find some good info for a jet boat?

Re: cam
I'm no expert, but I would think a stock 10 quart oil pan should work for you. I know some guys using the stock Merc 7 quart oil pans with 600+ hp engines without problems. Perhaps someone else can chime in on your oil pan here---or perhaps Bob may know or get you the correct answer.
Rmbuilder/Bob really knows his stuff....he'll get you zero'd in.

Re: oil pan
It's a 10qt Doolley pan, I forgot to ask Bob if it will fit. I'm talking about the pan rails fitting a stroker crank and rods. The pan rails are not notched for a stroker. I will be running a Callies 4.250 crank with Eagle H beam rods 6.385 and ARP2000 bolts.

,
i would use the 305's going to need alot more comp with the 325 unless your charging..
i built a 9.8 540 9/4/1/ canfield 310's , crane 731 cam, merlin single plane , holley 950hp, msd ignition.
made 560 peak hp at 5300
made 621 peak tourqe at 3700 - 600 thorugh 4200 rpm
this was full dress and stainless marine exhuast
numbers could be alot higher with dry header's. you would see a little bigger #'s with the lightning header.
the heads are a little too big and cam is a little small.
and i could use more comp. a solid 550hp is fine for my use
funny thing is others posted similar combos claiming wayyy bigger #'s. these are real...
