Default Sea Strainers Install ?

I'm installing sea strainers for my motors. The question I have from the experts (OSO Members), do they have to be installed below the water line?

The boat had none installed before.

Its best to have them at or below the water line. This helps the supply to the sea pumps. In some boats I have had to mount them above just slightly. Once they were primed with water they didnt have a problem picking up water.

Also make sure you come into the top of the screen and pull water out under the screen.

Should you also install a water shut off valve on them too ?

Alot of people dont on a Bravo because its supposed to be at the transom. I atleast install them into the sea strainer and connect my incoming hose to that.

run a ball valve before the strainer so you can turn off the valve when you're out and you need to clean debris out of the strainer.
