thanks for everyones help the shifting by hand didn't drop into forward. felt good going into reverse and neutral. taking it on wed. to get looked at.

Well the verdict is in. All it was is a broken cable where it screwed into the gimbal ring. The casing broke away from the brass threaded fitting that screws into the gimbal ring. Hard to find but all is well now. Thanks for everyones help.
