when I was on my way back from the cove about a 1/4 mile out the motor started sputtering and noticed the water pressure guage at 0 and the temp looked normal then not really knowing what was going on I tried running it like that then thats when it started smokin, I opened the hatch and I noticed the coolant tank boiling. The F-up part is that I dont even think my boat has a freakin alarm because It never went off nor did the warning light come on. Give me a break im new to this $hit.

Our 2004 (in an '05 boat) 496 has an alarm that will sound for low water pressure, high water/manifold temp, oil pressure and drive lube level. I have sounded the alarm for low water pressure when packing it up full of sand and it has sounded before it even got hot. Lately I have been getting an alarm at WOT and it comes on when the temp gauge pushes a bit past 180 (I have been told many times by many techs the alarm will sound for temps in the 205-207 range and up). Working this issue out now (possibly due to a scored brass housing on the sea water pump - 500 hours).

The alarm has saved me from damage but even so these engines also have the Guardian mode which will limit the RPMs depending on the condition and put it in a limp mode when there is a severe problem.
