When i first ran my SCX's i used Merc gear lube (less than an hour) but the drives shifted to hard. Call Imco and they picked them up to see what was wrong. They told me that their drives need the TORCO ATF which is thinner than the Merc fluid thats why the hard shifts. When i got the drives back they did shift easier with the Torco.

I've noticed 30-40 deg. drops in oil temp and a huge reduction in pitting of the gears. That's what I have seen as the biggest cause of failures with built drives. The stock XR's seem to break one of the shafts before the gears go.
I've tried Mobil 1 gear lube with the Pro Blend and had a problem with clutches hanging up and sticking. After a hard run they wouldn't come out of gear. If they did, then they wouldn't go back in gear. Most of them would need the forward gears replaced with the clutch since the clutch would tear them up.
I'm sure there are other good choices for lube but this has worked for me.

You use the Pro-Tuff gear lube additive? How many ounces per drive?

I have a 2 gallon pumper upper filler thingy that I fill the drives with. That's a technical term by the way.
I put 4 ounces of additive per quart of gear lube.
I use all of their stuff....assembly lube, oil additive, grease, etc. Really good stuff.

Alisyn Pro 21 zero weight gear lube.

Anyone familer with this stuff? I was advising a guy on another forum to stick with what worked. He thinks he can get another 50 rpm just by switching from merc HP to this stuff and I don't believe it.

That one is nice. I just made mine from a 2 gallon Chapin garden sprayer. It works great in summer, but it's slow in the winter when it's trying to pump pancake syrup.

Oh, no - now the Pro Tuff secret is out.
Been using the Pro Blend products for decades now; no oil related failures in anything.
