Hmmm, That's a bit odd.Can you tell me what the total stroke of the ram is and what the time from closed to open is, and then the tome from open to closed is?

Thanks,
Tom

Sure Tom... I won't be back down there till mid-week, but ill definitely check those things! I'll try to shoot a lil video as well.

Hope I'm not bothering you too much but I appreciate it and you guys still get my thumbs up even with my petty problems! lol

Sorry for the long delay in replying Tom!

The video is below... It took about 20 seconds to go up, and about 3 minutes to get it down, and only thing that helped was sometimes starting/stopping the switch.

The pump was obviously working in both directions b/c the trim tabs were going up and down.... and the hatch solenoid appeared to be working b/c it opened, yet closed slowly
My buddy had an extra solenoid laying around,so I threw it on and everything works great now! it actually closes really fast!! Guess b/c of the weight of the hatch?

BUT, Why did I have 2 solenoids that will extend the tab/hatch cylinder but wont retract them?? Is this some weird chance, or do I have some kind of issue going on?

Thanks a lot, Chris

Hi Chris,

I don't see a video.

I think I know what might have been happening. The solenoids are power sensitive and they actually take move power to bring the hatch lifter down. That is because they have to open against the back pressure of the weight of the hatch. The solenoid may have been weak or had a bad connection. So putting that one in either replaced it with a good one, or the connection was better after changing it out.

This is why it's a really good idea to clean all the connections, particularly the grounds.

The system is a single acting hydraulic cylinder, that means that it is powered when it is lifting the hatch as the fluid is pushed into the cylinder body behind the piston face. When it is lowered the weight of the hatch pushes it down. The pump is simply evacuating the fluid out of the way. We do make dual acting systems that push and pull, but they are a bit more complected and cannot share the Trim Tab pump.

I think that the reason you may have had two solenoids that did not work is that there is an issue with voltage on the system somewhere that still may cause an issue. I bet if you cleaned all of the connections really well (both ends of the ground wire at the solenoid block) we could get the other ones to work.

Thanks Tom... Everything is working great now! But I just want to avoid anymore issues... So I will get in there and clean all of the connections and re-apply some dielectric grease...
Of course theres one ground connection on the hatch block thats gonna be impossible to get to!
Hope this prevents anymore problems...

Thanks a lot man!! You guys are great over there....

Don't want to highjack your thread but I'm having a problem with my set up as well. I have the exact same set up, tabs and hatch actuator.

My hatch actuator sprays fluid out of the small hole at the top when its at full up or down. Do I need a new actuator?

Also just noticed last week that it looks like my pump is leaking fluid. The pump is mounted up high on the transom and now I got a red streak of fluid running down the transom. Checked to make sure all the lines are tight so it must be from the pump.

no worries on hi-jacking my thread!! But since you also have a Sunsation Rocket as well, Id love to see some pictures of it!! If you have some of the hull, graphics, transom, cabin, and cockpit/dash area, Id love to see them.. See any differences would be neat!

Sunrocket,

If the fluid is spraying out the hole at the top it means the seals have failed and it would be best to replace the actuator.

Sometimes when you see fluid running down the transom, it means that the reservoir was overfilled and is leaking out the back. Could this be the case? Have you added fluid recently?

Thanks!
Here is the link for pics of my Rocket. It has been an ongoing project for the last 2 years. I love it! It is a fun boat and a fun restoration project!
