Fastest Single engine V

I am interested in an updated version of the thread for fastest single engine V and what was the setup?
A friend is looking to purchase a single V, because of the roominess versus a cat, but would like to run 100 MPH.
In your opinion what is the best handling single engine v-bottom from 25-29, for going over 100 MPH with a reasonable power level?
This may get controversial but lets hear it anyway.

Griff 05-21-2013 02:06 AM

25-29' V bottoms are not designed to run 100mph....well at least not until the last few years when OL came out with their 29.

cp5899 05-21-2013 10:02 AM

I'm new to the powerboats as of the last 3 years. I just finished my 98 280 velocity and it is pretty damn fast with a pretty mild motor. I have a 509 with 088 heads (mild port work and 2.250 intake valves), 741 cam, b&m 250 with a single carb. I only got 3 psi with the b&m 250. Estimated hp was in the 650-675 range (guessing based on what I've read similar setups have made). With 4 people in the boat we ran WOT for a very short period of time and the motor went to 5400 rpms very quickly with a 30p bravo and the GPS was in between 86-88. The boat was still accelerating very hard, but I got nervous and let out. It was very fast since I was used to a 62-63 mph Baja I had before. I'm buying a 420 mega blower with super chiller and going to run 7 psi. Should be in the 800 hp range and I'm sure if you had the nerve to hold it at WOT it would run 100 mph. I enjoy the fast cruise I get from the added hp and big props. Steve stepp the owner of velocity says with a real 700 hp the boat will run 95-100 mph. Again, its to fast for me at this point, but gives a great cruise.

I'm not saying its the fastest single out there, but its pretty fast! Has good build quality (I've been all over mine when rebuilding it), has a good size cabin and has a very deep cockpit which is something I like. I personally love the looks with the flat deck design and no windshield. Another thing about the velocity is its a ton of fun to drive. A lot of driver input so you won't get bored. As for rough water. Many say the velocity doesn't do all that well with the pad bottom, but I say other wise. Steve stepp told me to try running 55 mph and up and see how it handles. I did just that a couple weekends ago in an honest 3 footers with white caps and we ran 60-65 across the lake and it was awesome. If we slowed down to 35-45 it beat us to death. Over all I absolutely love the boat and very glad I went with the velocity.

I'll be interested to see others recommendations.

You should do a search for the "kook" thread. A very sad story that unfolded right here before everyone's eyes. He put big power in either a 26 or 28 and eventually put his buddy in a coma. It kinda grounded me at the time.

Unlimited jd 05-21-2013 10:48 AM

i think that fountain across the river is about to go under!

cp5899 05-21-2013 11:22 AM

I noticed the fountain after someone else pointed it out...lol

I read the kook thread. I don't run all out ever. With or with out people in the boat. I own a company were I build and race drag bikes for over 12 years so I have a deep rooted respect of power and speed. I know it can bite at anytime. Boating to me is my relaxing time away from the bikes. With the bikes I have to live on the edge to be fast. Boats I chose not to, but I do like over the top wether I use it or not. I have had a 900 hp twin turbo lightning for almost 20 years (bought new in 94) and have only been to the track a hand full of times with it in the last 15 years. Do I need (or use to full potential) a 900 hp street truck, a 800hp boat or 7 second street bikes? No, not at all. But I like over the top I'm by no means saying I'm a great or the best or tons of experience boat driver. I only run or cruise at what the conditions allow. One weekend out of the two we have been out on the boat the weather was perfect and we still never went over 4800 rpms the whole day. I'm not so much interested in max all out speed with the boat. I enjoy cruising from hang out spot to hang out spot with friends. I hope I haven't given the impression that I run 95 every where we go. Most of the boats I run with cruise at 45-50. I like the fact I'm spinning 2700-2900 to run with them and when we get to the docks I love how the motor sounds with the blower, cam and dry exhaust. It's like a car show on water to me. Lol

I pray nothing ever happens to anyone on or around my boat.

Sorry for the side track of the thread. I made my first post as a reply to someone looking for a fast 25-29.

ThisIsLivin 05-21-2013 11:31 AM

I also have a Velocity 280 and I'm currently pushing 700hp and I've been just shy of 90 with 4 people and a full tank. The ride was actually quite nice, it seems to ride better with weight in the boat. When I run it alone with a light fuel load it starts getting a little squirrelly.

Geez!! My 25' OL must be dragging something. Best speed so far is 84@5400. I am running a 28 bravo though. What gets me is the 700hp that i had. Just got engine freshened up,dynoed 779@6000 without any belt driven accessories. Dont worry, I'm not trying to kill meself lol, just curious to know what its capable of. I have a Bravo 30 I might try out but dont want to blow up the drive. I agree that anything over 80 in a 25'boat is on a ragged edge and can be a handfull!!!

4mulafastech 05-21-2013 12:25 PM

cp5899, you got a nice Velocity there and I like your attitude.

jspeeddemon, the Howard 28 Bullet has to be right up there as one of the fastest. I have never ridden in one but was considering it an option when shopping. Ended up with my 292. Slow, but sure is comfortable.

28 Bullet

cp5899 05-21-2013 12:50 PM

Thanks for the compliment. I think it has turned out nice.

I agree the Howard 28 is a great looking fast boat!! I saw one a couple years ago on a poker run and it was very nice! Not very popular around here probably because they are made in Cali but, but a beautiful boat!! I've never seen one for sale around here or I would have looked at it as an option.

Here is a picture of one that belongs to a member on this site. I saved the picture he sent to me because the boat looks awesome!!

jspeeddemon 05-21-2013 05:26 PM

I owned a 1989 Velocity 23' 15 years ago, I installed a 572 BBC, and it was probably a little overpowered, but it ran very well with a top speed of about 92. I enjoyed the acceleration of the boat as well. I was probably lucky to not get hurt in that boat truthfully, it did not have external steering, and I was too young and brave to care at the time.

cp5899 05-21-2013 05:30 PM

I'm very glad I went with full hydro steering. It would be a tough boat to drive with out it.

searaycer 05-21-2013 06:14 PM

86 is the best so far out of my VR1, it needs a shorty lower and a 5 blade to get into the mid 90s but I am done spending money, and like the fact I am not killing the XR.

Coolerman 05-21-2013 06:24 PM

Gary Taylor (in jail now, you search him on OSO) had a howard 28 bullet that ran about 130. Check300 is pushing 120 in his checkmate. There have been several 26' Velocitys over 100mph, but you better be a good driver if you care to take them that fast.

Kidnova 05-21-2013 08:59 PM

Of the single engine production boats I would think ether Fountain or Velocity would be the fastest.

I have a 23 Welcraft Nova with just shy of 700 hp and best on GPS is 83 and change. Put that same power in the Fountain or Velocity and there would probably be a +,- 7-8 mph gain?

ballz2thewall 05-21-2013 09:14 PM

27 and 29'9 activators run pretty good

Well you didn't say if it had to be a offshore style.

cp5899 05-21-2013 09:41 PM

I'm guessing offshore style boat seeing this is "offshore only"

Lol

jspeeddemon 05-24-2013 12:06 PM

Activator and Velocity seems to be a good choice so far, any other suggestions?

Couginitnordic 05-24-2013 12:56 PM

I know of a few Nordics 25 and 28's running over 100. They are very efficient hulls and light.

1sickvelocity 05-24-2013 01:24 PM

V-Bottom

I have a 98' 26 velocity and run low 90s with a 525 blower motor 7lbs of boost and love it , handles great with the bigger tab and hydraulic power steering made a huge difference, Velocity I would have to say is def. in the top 3 fastest V bottom boats.

That is impressive for sure, Velocity bottom's are patented for a reason!

I would have to agree 100%, I have raced against more Velocitys than ANY other brand that were actually VERY fast, several faster than my modified Baja and they do it with 80% as much hp as I have, Smitty

Thebossbultsma 05-24-2013 05:11 PM

I have a 24 predator marine viper with dual hydrolic steering and imco extension box did 74 with a 468 bbc with 475 hp now I'm just about to find out what a 496 stocked bbc with 600 hp will do. It won't be 90 but in the 80's for sure ill now in the next couple weeks.

ballz2thewall 05-24-2013 08:46 PM

the guy mark that used to build activators is now building Rage power boats I heard they run pretty good to

searaycer 05-24-2013 09:12 PM

I love my VR1, Steve Stepp is the man!

Dave M 05-25-2013 07:45 PM

29 Outerlimits, sure, if you can afford one.
27, 30 Activator, probably the fastest otherwise, pretty affordable.
30 Superboat, affordable, not as fast but great in rough or flat water.
29 Warlock
29 Fountain
Kryptonite

Look at the boats that win the races. Who cares if you are crazy fast in a short flat water drag race.

zt260 05-25-2013 10:54 PM

110mph is my upper end. Not for everyone in a 10 year old hull, but I'm still here. lol

What do you have for power?
How is the handling, does it chine bad at that speed?

TMR 05-27-2013 10:57 PM

My guess it has twins!

Mtuned 05-28-2013 12:05 AM

The H2X is good for top speed, if your not concerned about doing anything but straight line smooth water speed :).

Handles quite well. The chine is the worst if you try to hold 90mph. It just takes time to master.

I've done just a tad over 83 gps in my 23 Nova with just shy of 700 hp, and you're right. High 70s to low 80s is in deed a hand full, at least in my Nova. Simple truth is, the hull simply wasn't/isn't designed for that kind of speed.

V.I. Outlaw - I'm running a bone stock Mirage 27P. Not sure of the RPM at 80ish. Too damn busy driving the boat to look at the tach (not kidding LOL) but probably around 5500-5600. I mention this as maybe you'd get more top end with a 3 blade?

ThisIsLivin 06-06-2013 05:36 PM

Nothing I've seen in an offshore is faster per horsepower than a Velocity. I run 90 with 4 adults and a full tank with shy of 700hp in a 280. Gary Cook from PFE ran 103 with a single NA setup in a 26'. Haven't seen anybody break 100 with a single NA motor in a full size offshore hull.

The 29 kryptonite I'd say is just as fast. Mine goes 93 with 650hp na my buddies went 102 with 740 hp and there are quite a few other guys with these that run 100. Breaking 90 in a kryptonite happens pretty easy since mine is loaded for daily cruising with sound system/amps nice cabin etc its not race weight. I'm also running a stock xr drive with a stock lower. I'd probably run faster with an imco lower

You can see how easy it is to drive.. I filmed these while driving. Heres a quick run to 90.. there was some boatwakes getting me from the side even
