Just looking to get some opinions on what is hot for oil temps. Im seeing mine climb to 225 after 1/2 mile at wot and only will fall back down to 215 ish when cruising. Running really good oil and have over sized oil cooler already. What else can i do. and is that to hot.

For mineral oil, 250F is a good number to stay under. Synthetics are generally good to 300F.

Mine gets up to about 230 when running hard, probably stays around 210-220. 502 mag MPI with about 520hp, and stock oil cooler. My temp sender is in my filter relocate which is before the cooler I believe, so I am seeing actual temps. From my understanding if your temp sender is after the cooler you add 20-30 to get actual temp. I am running 20/50 Valvoline VR1 racing oil, not synthetic

I try to keep my Mobil 1 V-twin 20/50 under 300. Takes a long run at WOT on a hot day to get there though. Pan Temps with Teague offshore cooler.

I run cenpeco 20w50. Racing oil with Lucas oil stabilizer. And I'm seeing 225. I can get it to 230 235. If I hold wot for almost a mile. I have a pro charger that uses engine oil to lubricate itself.

I have mercury oil thermostats. I see about 180 cruising and 210* at WOT. Running a 10 quart pan, with plate style oil coolers. Ive tested the merc oil stat element in a pot of water with a thermometer. At approx 180, the element is starting to open, by 200ish, it was fully open.

I see alot of stuff on the net claiming that certain race teams and oil brands talk about 300* oil temps. Keep in mind, these guys running the oil temp that high, are keeping it in for 1 race. My oil stays in my engines for 10-15 hours, and my bearings stay in much longer than that. i dont plan to tear my engines down every other boating weekend. So what those guys get away with doesnt really relate to my boat engines. 200 degree oil flows almost like water. 300 degrees, its gettin pretty thin.

I'd like to see how long a semi truck, pickup truck, or even daily driver would hold up to 300 degree oil sump temps regularly. Most vehicles are designed to have oil temp relative to engine coolant temp, (190-210*). I personally would never want my oil anywhere near 300* sump temp. Localized temps can be much higher.

So in my scenario, 502 mag mpi, 520hp and I see 230-240 oil temp max with a stock oil cooler. If it was you would you want your oil temp to run cooler or would you leave it as is? I run a crossover with bypass and 140 tstat. my water temp hits 145 and just stays there. Now I could block off my bypass and run no thermostat and bring my temps down if I wanted to. Would you make a change or do you think its fine as is?

Yeah i have the same question I do not run a thermostate at all , my engine sees 145 when im running it hard and then istantly cools off but the oil stays warm, Should i try to lower my oil temps or does it need to get to 225-235 to burn off condinsations in motor.

IMO that isn't too hot. But, what does it climb to on a longer WFO run? And will it creep back down?
