budman, this is exactly what i said this thread would do,make people with afr heads start to worry.afr sells thousands of sets of cylinder heads yearly, quite a few oso members run them without problems.i know full force tim has a problem right now but we don,t know the cause of the failure yet.i hope if others have had problems with afr heads they would chime in on this thread but as of now i have not seen that happen.i like tim and i feel bad for him but i feel that afr has a very good product and i will continue to use them.the next few sets i get i will have my shop check the valve to guide clearance but i won,t loose any sleep about the ones i have installed in the past.i have one getting run on the dyno tomorrow,it,s sister made just shy of 1000 hp with afr heads.this post is in now way meant to be a slam on tim,he will get it sorted out and if i can help him in any way i will.

Thank you MIKE! It seems every thread becomes diluted with emotion , when searching for facts.

No not even close to the dyno. trying to get things sorted to go for spintron testing. Getting ready to pull the trigger on a billet runner intake. Can't decide who to go with. I know who builds the best but not sure if I can get their best work. Motor is on the side burner for the time being wife got a new job traveling 4 days a week. Boat is headed to Ohio in a couple weeks for a new super structure, top deck bottom freshening and general all over. At this point I couldn't run the motor if it was finished so decided to go all out with the build.

Not casting stones , but curious, were you running new fresh fuel or or a top off from last year, since detonation has been brought up and 9 month old gas may not have the original octane level.
btw I sincerely hope that everything works out well for you.
Only asking because a set of afr heads may be in my future.

Totally fresh fuel, this was not detonation end of story....

So.... Now you guys have me wondering about my AFR 265's. They were installed out of the box. Engine was flogged pretty good on the dyno - even ran it with a steady-state test at 4500 RPM for 5+ minutes. We discovered an issue with it being a little lean at that point so I think those valves had to get pretty hot at that time. It has since had about 15 hours on it, only been full throttle once. Am I out of the woods for valve clearance problems at this point? I would think if there were issues it would have reared its head by now. :helmet:

tons of people run them out of the box no issues, no guarantees with HP engines and parts bud....

Absolutely afr is a great product, many no issues at all, I have had a failure that could be one or two things, or a slight bit of both combined for a perfect recipe, hence me only posting facts of what I have found so far, i will not speculate what happened only looking at fact, you know my mess on a private note, maybe afr just had a bad day and it's my luck to be at that end of it...

I will have every detailed fact on my own thread when I have all things looked at.... If you look back I only posted fact or leading details to facts at the end, it's kinda like a crime scene investigation I am not posting what I really want to...that's just going to cause issues..

You are absolutely right, Tim. Sorry if my post caused any hand wringing - I probably should have stated it differently. Most of the time I would expect an issue like this to present itself fairly early in the run-in process. Those of us who have been running the heads for a while are probably OK, but as you said, there are no guarantees in life. A little bit of reversion from an exhaust leak, or some detonation from a bad tank of gas, and it can be game over for any of us. Even stock engines can fail.

Good luck with your rebuild - I hope you get the help you need to see the water this summer. You are taking a very mature and level headed approach to all of this - a great model for us all.
