No doubt dude, it totally sucked and I was in my early 20's making only $14hr at the marina.... If you look at the picture on the right you can actually see how much they overlapped the laminate.

However, it was all a blessing in disguise because I replaced the gas tank, removed the hook and also extended the firewall/cockpit liner out to the hulsides turning it into a full bulkhead. I also removed the screwed in divider between the v-berth and replaced it with a full bulkhead.. In addition, I made bulkheads under the driver and passenger side entry way to the cabin.. It stiffend up the boat dramatially with a lot less flex and as I mentioned picked up a few mph!
