Good luck with the build. If you havent purchased the crank yet, i would personally opt for the centerweighted version for an endurance marine engine. Eagle makes it both ways, and not much difference in cost.

I believe the compstar, and molnar 4.25 cranks are center counterweighted

Nothing wrong with a 540 either. There a good solid proven build. Nothing wrong with any of the cubes mentioned. Maybe someday get the compression down on it an slap a blower on it. For now see if boating is for you and if you even enjoy it. It obsorbes a lot of time and can be frustrating. Who knows.... btw I know a lot of millionaires 10x over and most you'd think had a Friday night beer budget.

Wonder why k1 doesn't the center counter weight BBC crank. I've seen mopars and some others but not BBC. Any word lately on Ohio crankshaft. I see they offer their promax version now for a few hundred more bucks. When I talked to dick at more power he had a customer brake one but coulda been a fluke.

After talking with Some of the guys from Molnar in Grand Rapids, Ateco by Chicago, Jim V and numerous others including my father in law I was suggested into building a solid 540 bottom end then upgrade from there. Luckily I have family who knows there way around american motors, which I dont being a european car guy in the past and they are helping build it and with machine work. But most of the people who know motors it seems they dont know marine stuff which Im learning is a totally different animal. Im just glad alot of guys on here and that ive met over the years are a wealth of knowledge. Im really wanting to build a solid 540 which i can add onto over the next few year until I decide to upgrade to something larger boat wise. In all honesty id rather have people suggest me to spend the money, spend it once and not have to do it again which will just cost me more in the long run haha
It's all good bud. Great list of professionals there but remember sometimes they tell you what you want to hear....Like 540, because it's easier and faster for them to achieve their main goal, making profit, then discussing a million ways to save you money.

Obviously there's nothing wrong with a 540 but there's plenty more options and combinations worth looking into.

The eagle cranks are decent but after seeing how inconsistent clearances are and getting. Mine where we wanted them, I would buy scat for the same money they are always right on.

I think your starting out right and if you listen to Jim he'll lead u in the right direction. Doing a reliable budget build is fine. Also I noticed you must live in or around the GR area. If you need any machine work, balancing etc look up more power racing near Sparta. They dyno also. Good guys. I practically lived there for years.
More Power has been recommended to me by more then one person... them and performance engineering in jenison. Jim has been a great wealth of knowledge so far. He is going to be doing work on the 088 heads I have till I decide to change those out next year..... except those Promaxx heads he had there and hes been talking to me about are really tugging at me to just buy a set and save the money from rebuilding my heads. Boating has sucked me in over the years started with an old Cobra Jet sidewinder and ended up with a Searay for 2 years after that then rebuilt a Formula 242 LS 2 years ago ..... then the wife and I decided to spend more and buy a biat we can enjoy alot for the summer and ended up with the Powerquest as a fall purchase. Motor has 900 orignal hours so it had a good long life just dropped to 125psi and here I am.

Ive been hearing that now after I bought it..... its amazing how many shops either love Scat and hate Eagle or vise versa. Like More Power he recommended a bare minimum of Eagle stuff and no Scat, then the guys at Ateco say skip Eagle and they use Scat..... The part that blows me away is there all forged in the same place for the most part its just the quality control once it get to each company here in the US.

Scar cranks always seem to come in better then eagle as far as clearances, my eagles are all over the place... one engine the rods are all close the other they are a spread, all within my spec likings but it's annoying when all should be the same..
